steering problem
So i got a '97 trans am, and the thing darts and dives all over. especially on an older road that is kinda worn where normal tires fit the road. I have replaced upper balljoints, and tierod ends, seemed to take some play out, but hasnt fixed the problem all the way.
I was wondering if my caster can be off far enough to cause this problem. Thanks, any feed back is appreciated |

Re: steering problem
Running the wider profile tires as on T/A & Z28 will always cause pulling with road contour to varying degrees.
A lot depends on how bad the road is , how worn the tires are , & are they properly inflated. Worn or leaking front struts will also cause control and handling issues such as this |

Re: steering problem
Have it aligned, the professionals know a hell of a lot better than you do if something is off.

Their answer was to re-balance and align. (didn't fix the problem) Went to an independant tire store and they found one tire was out of round and the ball joint on the left side was worn and both struts were worn out. My point is - that you would think GoodYear, of all people, would have checked these (major) things to get a proper alignment , but they failed to even mention them. I was told everything was fine and it was aligned. In reality, all they did was set the toe and did nothing else. Makes me wonder how many other folks have been ripped off like that.

Re: steering problem
Check your sway (stabalizer) links out. Without them the car can be a handfull. As far as alignment goes, most cars since the mid 80's only have camber and toe built into them for adjustments, the strut towers contour sets the caster, which opens the door for bad strut bearings, but I don't think so.

Re: steering problem
Well I finally got fed up with all of the "GoodYear" crap and just replaced all four tires with B F Goodrich Traction TA and the problem is solved.
With the GoodYear tires that I had on there being so out of round and pretty much non-balanceable for what its worth - I wonder if a disgruntled employee may have had something to do with all of this since the worker strike- Maybe doing something to "sabotage" a batch of tires just to cause trouble. I have never had that much trouble and issues with any tires i've ever bought before |
