I am having a problem with my steering column on my Porsche. Frequently when I make a right hand turn the steering column locks up. It only occurs when I go right. We have taken the steering column apart but we cannot figure out for the life of us what the heck is going on.
Can anyone please help solve this mystery. Thanks in advance to all who respond.

Re: Steering problem Porsche 911
sounds like the rack and pinion maybe binding up. disconect both tie rod ends and see if the binding still occurs. if the binding is gone after disconnecting the tie rod ends, move each wheel seperately by hand to see which one (right or left) is the problem.
PS stupid question, but is your power steering belt tight? the cable guy |

Re: Steering problem Porsche 911
I'm sorry do you mean BINDING (increase effort) or hard LOCK-UP, like ignition key lock.
If binding: I agree, rack & pinion. I have also seen a post where a person replaced the bearings in this. The bearings have part numbers stamped in them and he replaced them with standard off-the shelf bearings. I can't remember where I saw this, probably www.rennlist.com or www.pelicanparts.com Tech Forum. I didn't know 911 had power steering...if they do it would probably work the same right or left. |
