95 Legacy L Wagon ABS Problem

The ABS system has been acting up, as in the ABS light will come on for a few miles then go off, and the hydrolic abs motor running. I took it to a local repair shop and was told a wheel sensor was bad, but they couldn't get the code because it was intermitent. Instead of trying to guess which one, they said to keep driving it till the ABS light stayed on then to bring it in to pull the code. My question is , is this safe? While trying to stop, this sensor malfuntions and trys to unlock the brakes and the car will slide forward when braking. Can I disconnect the main unit to prevent this from happening? Can I run the car safely without the ABS? Thanks for any input.

You will be okay. It sounds like you might be missing teeth on the excitor ring on you axle.. Your mechanics right, instead of trying to guess which sensor is bad. It might be a excitor ring instead. Drive until the light stays lit...Ist cheaper that way..
