95 530i keyless entry problem, need help

Hi,
I have a '95 BMW 530i, and the keyless entry no longer works. I tried both keyless modules and I changed batteries. It started a few months back where once in a while it seemed the keyless entry would not unlock the doors. Then it got more frequent all the way to the point where it appeared to never work, but I gave up and just used the (old fashioned) manual key entry. There has never been any repairs to the alarm/electrical system other than battery replacement.
I have 2 small kids so keyless entry is a nice to have. Any ideas where to start? What to suspect?

Now, I may have missed the obvious because I was going through a divorce until just recently, but any help will be very appreciated.
