Running from the Police

What are your thoughts on running from the cops. I know it is wrong on many different levels, but has anyone ever thought about it. The reason I post here is because it seems very possible on any number of bikes. I am thinking mainly of 600's but I am sure smaller ones could do it.

I asked my Gov't teacher about it and he said you would most likely only incur fines if you were caught. You might go to jail, but prison is unlikely.

Anyway, tell me what you guys think.

Re: Running from the Police

Not go to prison? lol.

It's just like car chases, depending on how many offenses are violated, it could be a big fine, or jail time for the night, or for 5 years and suspension of license for a definite or indefinite peiod of time, or bike being impounded temporarily or permanently, depends on state, etc. And of course, anything that happens as a result of the chase, wrecks, loss of human life, will just pile on to charges. Not to mention, reckless driving and putting other motorists in danger. And very likely, most perps don't get away with it, they simply do not posses the skill and some backroads are needed for that. Although those who get away with it easily is because cops choose to call off the chase, but that solely relies on his/her judgement. On freeway, helicopters can keep up upto certain speed, and they dont have to deal with traffic, they travel three dimensionally. Plus there is a saying, "faster than a speeding ticket, but slower than motorola." So if the cop wants to nail the runaway perp at all cost, he'll inform every unit in the area and have the chopper or cessna patroling. In 95% of the chase where riders successfully run away is because cops call it off based on situation and/or level of endangering other motorists. Most mature and experienced riders will just pull up and accept the ticket or talk their way out of it.

For sure if the cops wanted to nail the biker as a personal vendetta, there'll be nothing stoping him theoretically. Sure he's slow, but he's got a whole team.

Not to mention there is a very good chance for the rider ending up dead. This is besides the rules of personal ethics or laws of the court.

Re: Running from the Police

not sure about the technology of your cops but down here they have cameras that constantly record. as soon as they put the lights on it records and saves all data including 2 minute before they hit the lights.

i was chatting to a guy who ran from a highway cop and got away. 8 months later they hauled him away for some jail time (6 months). the camera caught him and his mate speeding and then the chase. they got his plate and tried to take him to court. he tried to dodge by leading the cops on a false paper trail until they arrested him and took all his gear as evidence. he has no licence now and will never be allowed to have one. he had the choice of either that or more jail time.

i have run once but would never do it now. when i ran the cop had to U-turn in traffic before he could chase. i hid in a high school until the sirens turned off. swapped gear with a mate and headed home carefully

seriously not worth it

Re: Running from the Police

One of my coworkers did it several years ago...he and two buddies were out clowning on thier 600's, and the three of them took off WOT from a light, three wide. Because it was dark, they hadn't noticed the cop behind them a few cars back...

At 90 mph in a 55 zone, Gordy saw his friends drop back, and then realized there was a car coming up behind him fast, after splitting his friends behind him...then the party lights came on...

So he double downs and nails it, gets up to about 140, leaves the cop fading back, and proceeded to run through every light on the way by going into the right turn lanes an around the medians on the cross streets.

But like a moron he went home. Put the bike in the garage, stripped off his leathers and went to bed. About 15 minutes later the cops were at the door. His roomate, unaware of what had happened, let them in. They rousted him from bed, and led him out to the garage, where the bike was still doing the "Tic,tic, tic" of cooldown from a hard run...

He got a multitude of traffic and criminal charges, lost his license for a year, paid about $1000 in fines, had to attend classes, couldn't get insurance on another bike for years after....he decided it wasn't worth it.

BTW, the cop just slowed down and pulled his buddies over, who then narc'd him off, after being threatened with charges of aiding evasion....

Re: Running from the Police

Well, that kind of changes my mind. Some of my friends say cops don't even bother with pulling over bikes anymore. Cops just let them go because they know it's not worth it. I don't think my city has a helicopter or a plane for that matter. But I am guessing Missouri State Highway Patrol does. Do you think it would be easier to make a clean getaway on a long stretch of highway or a curvy back road.

Re: Running from the Police

I've seen them chase runners for an hour or more on open highway, that's pretty much out. The longer it goes, the more units and the farther ahead of you they can get.

On backroads you might run the risk that the cop knows the area better than you...might know just where to place another unit to block your only way out...

I was sitting in Steak and Shake one night, listening to a couple of St Peters cops trading stories...

One said he watched a sportbike blow through a red light, so he took off after him, and the guy just wouldn't stop...but then the bike missed a turn and went end over end into a field...he said he put his spotlight on the dust cloud and saw the rider stagger to his feet, bike in pieces...

So he turned the spot off, told dispatch he lost him, and left.

Re: Running from the Police

i have only been pulled over by the cops once on my bike in 10 years. it was two weeks ago. talked my way out. he he they played good cop/bad cop.
they thought i ran a red light but i had a green arrow. i lane split to make the light so the technical side was, i wasn't in the left lane to have a green light therefore i ran a red. a car changed lanes in front of me blocking my green light so thats why i lane split. to avoid a collision. it seemed to work

most of the time you can get away with minor stuff. they'll only pull you over if you are a danger to others.

most give you the attitude test. act like a dick and you'll get done.

Re: Running from the Police

as a military police officer (as I am), i know it is almost impossible to get away, if we want you, we'll get you...unless you are as skilled as ghostrider or mat mladin or something to that effect you shouldn't run from cops in the first place on your bike man...death isn't worth it...but you do get to heaven quicker...*shrugs*

Re: Running from the Police

Running from the cops is STUPID STUPID STUPID. Unless the cop in question is your girlfriends husband, and has unlawful reasoning behind pulling you over, it just isn't worth it. I was a volunteer EMT years back, and came on scene where a fleeing motorcyclist doing 110 plus hit a Dodge Caravan in the drivers door. He hit the van so hard, he pushed it straight sideways 15 ft. He flew through the drivers side window, decapitated himself and the driver of the van, and his head (still in his helmet) ended up in the lap of the front seat passenger (she was not happy). The van driver's head was found crushed like a melon in the back seat. The worst part, the cop said he was just going to give him a warning about a burnt turn signal bulb, and the guy had no priors or warrants. They can only speculate that the reason he ran was for the thrill of the escape, as he had done nothing wrong.

Re: Running from the Police

Man that sounds sick, Hollywood couldn't even think of it. How would the van driver's head get decapitated? I imagine the motorcylists head was cut off by the window.

Re: Running from the Police

It appeared that the cyclist hit the b-pillar, and it threw his head forward off the windshield into the passengers lap, and his body ripped the metal from the b-pillar which caught the driver in the side of the neck. It was one bloody, gruesome scene to say the least.
