Exclamation 92 mpv dies out

I have a 1992 Mazda mpv 6 cyclinder, It starts, runs and idles great but my problem is that when you are in park, neutral ,or drive the rpm's die after about 2200 rpm ,
You can drive it all day long and get up to about 110 km an hour but if you have any load on the motor (going up hill) or you step on the gas to hard ,the motor just dies.. until you let up on the pedal again .It seems like after you press the gas pedal down past the first 1" or 2" ,the motor will not respond. NOW the tricky part ...If the transmission is in LOW you can red line the motor (5000 rpm) ????
It has a new fuel filter and runs like a charm
There is NO Engine service light on (And yes it works )
It revs like a charm if the tranny is in low only any other gear and it dies after 2200 rpm
Ive heard of mass air flow sensor and Distributor shafts are famous for going on these things Any help ANYONE PLEASE
