Thinking of getting a stealth, need some advice

Ok, so a guy is selling a 1992 twin turbo stealth. He keeps his cars in very good shape and takes care of them really well. I test drove his car and it drove great. It needs a wheel bearing and an alignment (no biggie) but the one thing that worries me is he said that he thinks there is something wrong with a syncro in the tranny so he doesnt shift it into first gear while the car is moving. I am wondering what the long term effects that syncro being bad are and how much it would cost to fix. I know that isnt the best description but that is the best i have right now. I am just trying to figure out if the car is worth it. A little info on the car: its a 1992, around 130,000 miles, new clutch and flywheel, recent tune up, had all regular maintence, price is $6500. thanks for the help.

Re: Thinking of getting a stealth, need some advice

I'd shoot for $5,500 with a bad synchro and that many miles.

^^Same here. Synchros are a common thing to go out on our cars unfortunately, so if you did one you might want to rebuild all of them.

Re: Thinking of getting a stealth, need some advice

Thats not a bad synchro. A bad synchro is when it grinds when shifting. Our cars don't like to be put back into first when teh car is moving. It is hard for a reason...to keep you from doing it. check www.kbb.com to get an idea of what it should go for, then deduct the money for the repairs. If you want to get a deal, pretend you intend to get the tranny rebuilt (because he thinks it's a bad synchro) and see if you can get him to take another grand off of it. Good luck. Also before you buy it, I'd suggest reading our FAQ

Re: Thinking of getting a stealth, need some advice

That depends on where you get it done. However, you don't need to replace them unless you're getting grinding when you shift. Most dealers will tell you that you need a new transmission, don't believe that, it is a load of crap.

On a side note I can shift into first without a problem at higher than 10mph.

Re: Thinking of getting a stealth, need some advice

synchros are cheap..like $80 a piece from Kormex. Youngvr4 (another mod) has done it, so he knows more specifics. But hte problem is finding a tranny shop that will do work when you bring htem parts you ordered online...and if they will warranty it. But literally, nobody's TT goes into first gear when it's moving. It's not supposed to, that isn't synchros.
