Stop Lamp not working

Hello to all,

The other day while I was driving I developed to what seemed a simple problem that I could repair myself. WRONG. Here's my problem with my 89' Camry.

The dash light indicates I have a bad lamp bulb in the rear problem so I had my buddy look back there while I steped on the brake pedal. He indicated to me the the LEFT stop lamp is burnt out. OK no problem right? WRONG! I then turned on the head light switch to burn all the bulbs and everything seems fine except for the left side. When I step on the pedal the stop lamp on the left which is also on ( cuz I turned on the headlights) goes out!!! When I take my foot off the pedal it re-lites??? For some reason I can't get the left lamp to lite BRIGHTLY when I step on the pedal.

I then head to PEP BOYS and replace the two rear stop lamps but it still didn't solve the problem.

Can anyone help me? Bulbs are brand new on both sides- it's just the left side for some reason fails. The turn signal work fine on both sides.
Again it just developed while driving.

Just hope it won't cost me big time bucks . It'll just have to wait for another week before I can handle this service.
