speedometer cluster

I have recently had my speedometer cluster go out on me. Replaced with used one that worked when removed. Put it in and it worked for 10 minutes. Is this a cluster problem or a computer problem or what? This has also affected the temp. guage. The fuel guage still works.

it is a 2004 impala. the speedometer works sometimes and sometimes not. The temp guage does not reset at zero on start up. It registers the temp but it is registering it from the last reading.

The odometer works fine. the trip odometer works fine. the gas guage works fine just the temp guage does not reset to zero on start up and the speedometer only works on occasion.

Check Engine Light or Malfunction Indicator Lamp,,,, same thing

...well the temp comes from the ECT sensor to the pcm and frpm the pcm to the guage. same for the speedo. It is either , wiring, connector , the guage, the pcm.

Repair manuals are available at most county librarys and speaking of librarys some have access to ARRC automotive repair you can access from home if you have your local library card. Also some have access to Alldata at the library. This is also a good way to discover the type of manual you like.
GM repair manuals (are quite technical for owner use) are available from dealers at pretty high cost, but can be found on ebay occasionally. Chiltons and/or Haynes manuals are available at most auto parts retailers and Amazon. 2004 manuals will be a bit harder to find than older years. Also check AF classified section.

Re: speedometer cluster

I have reason to believe that my impala has been under water befor i bought it. The seat brackets under the driver and passenger side are rusted. Bought the car used with no warranty so i am kinda screwed. I think i might have a ground connection going bad or not fully connected due to rust. Is it possible to take out the wiring and clean all of the wire ends or connections to check the grounds or what. Or do you have any other advice?

Re: speedometer cluster

Impala's seem to have a high number of BCM failures and when they go bad can cause all kinds of messed up things to happen. Under water maybe but Impalas have an issue with water coming in the the passenger side floor which could explain your rust on the P. side. Whats all the other metal look like under the dash and such?
