Question Transmission pan gasket leaking

Hi ! I have a 97 Pontiac Montana,3.4L. The transmission pan gasket has been changed twice now for tranny service and both times a few days after I get it back the gasket starts leaking. Is there a fix to this problem? Bolts to loose, too tight, not torqued to spec, gasket sealant needed, etc;. What is the correct torque for the tranny pan bolts?? Thanks

Re: Transmission pan gasket leaking

USMC VET,
The spec torque for the transaxle pan bolts is 10 ft-lbs-not very much! Very easy to over torque. I have dropped mine twice and each time reused the original gasket after cleaning it up.

Unfortunately, the only way to correct your problem is to drop the pan and redo the job. Loosening and retorqueing will not solve this one since the gasket has "set" under current torque.

Regards,
Gbudnick

Re: Transmission pan gasket leaking

Someone alone the way probably threw out your OEM gasket. Its expensive (around $30) but you never have to replace it unless it tears. Its the only way to fly.
