losing weight

yeah so i've decided i'm going to be a lightweight rower next season. i'm too short (5'8.5") to be a competitive heaviweight. this means i'm going to have to drop down to 160lbs (a bit higher is ok because you dehydrate yourself and stuff to make weight but not much higher) so i'm probably going to have to cut 15-20 lbs of muscle, not looking forward to that at all. i like being big, i'd love to cut the fat but not the muscle, i'd much rather be around 200lbs.

Re: losing weight

What's your plan? Just not eat? Thats the only way I know to cut muscle, starve them.

Re: losing weight

well im going to start by cutting all my fat, then i'll just eat fewer calories than my body burns naturally (probably about 500cal below my bmr) and i'll do lots of cardio. i'll try to do it slowly so if i'm getting angry and hungry i'll eat a bit more but basicly it'll be like cutting fat but worse.

Re: losing weight

So you want to lose muscle mass....hmmm....this is a new one for me.

With your cardio I would try low intensity longer workouts, like 1+ hours. Aside from that just eat very little meat and protein and cut some of the carbs. Vegan rowing.....that could be a sport all in itself. Or you could just lay around until next season, like dont get up at all, dont move. Atrophy is the easiest way to lose muscle mass.

How much do you weigh now? It seems to me that the most healthy option would be to try and bulk up some more and try your hand in the heavier class.

Re: losing weight

well i'm 195lbs now, i've probably got 15-20lbs of fat. the thing about going into the heavier class is that you really need to be at least 6', even that's a little short for heavyweight. most heavyweights are around 6'2", my coach last year was about 6'5" and 200+lbs. i've got no chance in a higher weight catagory so i'm pretty much stuck as a lightweight, which is fine because i've never been anything but big, and this way it's going to force me to lose every pound of bodyfat, so i'll be leaner than i've ever been.

i'm trying to look on the bright side since i'm really not looking forward to losing muscle, but i like rowing competitively so i'll drop the weight until i'm done competing, then i'll try to bulk up to 190-200lbs and go more for bodybuilding, but i'll keep rowing because i love the sport.

Re: losing weight

bodybuilding does not necessarily mean those huge behemoths that compete. it simply means shaping (or building) your body to look a certain way using muscles. i'd only be huge, not massive. big but not disgusting looking (although i don't find the pros disgusting, i find it quite impressive and actually like some of it)

And your endurance should be a lot better. You'll be a rowing monster

Either that or you'll starve yourself too much and end up like this

Re: losing weight

All I ever hear you talk about doing is eating and sleeping. I had you figured as a chunky brittish guy, but you're skinnier than me! (6'5" 180) But I guess with my love of mayo, you'd probably figure I was a chunky guy too.

Fact: Chrises can eat whatever they want and never get fat... we own

ha ha, no i'm very skinny. haven't you seen the pics? (pic post + significant other thread)

i can actually do better than that pic, maybe i'll take a pic sometime and show you guys what it looks like when you can suck your guts up into your rib cage. when i breathe in hard under my rib cage i'm about 5-6" inches wide side-on.

you'd be hard-pressed to find an ounce of fat on me.

down to good exercise

the other day i carried 13.75 litres of drink about 2 miles steep uphill from the supermarket to home. it gets heavy after a while...
