First Car + Insurance

Hey,
Well im 15 at the moment and i was thinking of whether to grab a VW beetle and turn it into a VW Buggy as my uncle did this and it could do wheelies. I dunno what it was like on the 1/4 mile or 0-60 though.

What car could i get away with for a first car and have a reasonable insurance cost with it?

These are the ones i had in mind.

VW Jetta(like the one from Fast and the furious)
Ford Escort(until i realized the spoilers are naff! and its a cheap pikey car)
Honda Civic, old (but i dont know about the insurance on this :S)

I also didnt know whether to go for a smaller car like a Peugeot 206, Fiat Punto, Clio etc.

Only 2 years till i drive now and i was wondering to get a breif idea on what car would be suitable.

Also are neons legal? , because i remember hearing they werent, but they were if you had a remote control or something. Cheers!
