I need a harness wiring diagram for a 1987 XJ Cherokee 4.0L, 2WD. Specifically, the diagram pointing to the termination at the firewall. I have an intermittent starting problem that appears to be generated from this area. I have a Haynes manual but that's it.
Please reply. ThanX. Wayne |

If it is possible to be more specific, I can look at an 88 diagram that I have.
What system are you troubleshooting? the starter circuit or the ignition circuit? You might look at the post at the very top of this forum on the crank position sensor, which is by far the most common problem every Jeep mechanic will mention. Otherwise, if you can describe your problem a little more, maybe some of our forum readers can point you in the right direction. Downloads on such things as factory service manuals and diagrams are hard to find on the net now (use to be there) because Daimler-Chysler has cracked down due to copyright violation. You can buy them on CD from them (DC) though: https://techauthority.gltghosting.co...atalogId=10051 |

Re: Harness wiring diagram
Thank you for your prompt reply. Specifically, sometimes when I turn the key to start, the engine, starter, etc., turns but that's it. I found that when I wriggle the terminating harness wire connectors at the firewall and retry starting it cranks 99% of the time. I thought that by disconnecting the terminals and cleaning with proper solvents and sanding would resolve the problem but didn't work either. So, on an '87 XJ 4.0L, where would I find this crank positioning sensor. I use a Jeep manufacturer M.R.244 repair manual along with the Haynes manual, but there's no mention of that particular part. I wanted the diagram to locate the specific wires and maybe make some direct connections to determine it this may definitely be causing my starting problems. After perusing the forum on start problems I became a little discouraged because I would be replacing more parts through trial & error. Thank you again!

If you ar sure the problem is in the connector have another look at it make sure prongs on connector are good and not closed up/ try spreading them a little and check for broken wires and stuff like that. A good volt/ohm metor or test light will help. How many wires are in the connector. For a wiring diagram and repair info on it a All data sub would help you. http://www.alldata.com/products/diy/index.html

Good set of wiring on it. For some reason I can not find the crank sensor listed for a 1987. Does the older ones like it with a dist have a crank shaft sensor?

Re: Harness wiring diagram
your jeep has a distributor, inside it is the camshaft postion, on the bellhousing drivers side . About 11 o'clock from drivers seat you will find the crankshaft position sensor, the wires go up to a bracket on the fuel rail to oval connector two wires. Jeep used crank sensor on 2.5 starting in( 86) [email protected]

Also, your Jeep does have a crankshaft position sensor as my wife's 87 Cherokee pioineer 2WD with 4.0 has one. Like Dale said it will be on the bellhousing, driver's side about 11 o'clock position. |
