Multiple Codes - Cannot determine problem
My son's 95 GMC Jimmy has a constant check engine light.
(This has the 4.3L with 4x4 Automatic.) When tested with ODBII it indicated the following codes: P0141, P0441 & P1406 After reading several posts I believe the P0141 (O2 sensor) is probably secondary due to the other two which seem to indicate something going on with the EGR (incorrect purge flow & or pintle position circuit errors). He has indicated that he cannot even find the EGR valve to attempt to clean it. Does anyone know where it's located and should we just replace? Or is there another problem with the vehicle. Symptoms - will not idle (dies if you let off the gas) - not safe to drive! Someone supposedly replaced vacuum lines - but did they get the bad one if it exists?? Or what else could be the problem? |

Re: Multiple Codes - Cannot determine problem
The EGR is located basically under the air inlet on intake. ie: under the main air hose going into the intake. It is round , about 2 1/2" long and about 2" wide. I have the same truck. The best way to pull it out (from experience) is to first take off the shroud covering the fan, the get a extention (wobble type works good) - I think it is a 10mm socket, and guide the socket to the bolts (pull the electrical connector off first)...remove them slowly (to avoid dropping the bolt) - if you can work a finger or two in there to hold the bolt so it dosn't drop into, well, lost land....
and work the thing out. These things get carbon stuck in them which cause this condition. I cleaned mine up using a new xacto knife and a dremel tool with a brass brush. Once I cleared the carbon buildup (which BTW I had a chunk of carbon which was holding the EGR open), I re-installed it & the problem was GONE. I have seen on this forum, there is a screen available for these EGR's to assist in this not happening again. Car Quest has them, I believe. I'm getting one this weekend. Heck, for $10 or so to avoid this again, it is WELL worth it! ![]() Good luck! Jon |
