Do you here the clutch slipping or a whine from the transmission. Check fluid levels first.

Put the vehicle on jack stands and with the vehicle running use a long screwdriver and listen to where the sound is coming from. It could be a universal joint or a whine in the transmission. Try to determine the exact cause. Make sure if any u-joints have been replaced they are lubed and check the transmission fluid level. For some reason most quick lubes don't check the transmission level.

Okay on saturday I called the ford dealer ship they said that i had an aluminum casted transmission so I put transmission fluid in the transmission. It still whines. I replaced the rear u joints in the truck last year also. The whine sounds like it is coming from the transmission. under the stick shift etc..

Re: Help With My 93 Explorer

You could pull the top under the shift lever and try to determine what it is coming from. Just buying parts is going to be close to a used transmission.
Try slightly moving the shift lever and see if this increases the noise level.
How low was the transmission fluid level. You could check for some additive that might help.
