92 Ford Escort - Possible Ignition Switch Problem

I own a 92 Ford Escort. A few days ago I went to start the car; it would try to turn over but it wouldn't start. I tried a few more times with the same results so I took my key out of the ignition but the car was still trying to start and smoke was coming out from underneath the steering wheel. I had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. I did replace the starter a few months ago so I don't think the starter is the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: 92 Ford Escort - Possible Ignition Switch Problem

Correct me if wrong... engine turns but does not start. You removed the key and it continued to crank until the battery was disconnected?

This makes me think first of all that something is wrong with your ignition switch. The smoke was possible from a fuse being blown. Also, just because you put a new starter in does not mean there is nothing wrong with it. Is it a brand new one or a rebuilt one?

Anyway... since you removed the key and it continued cranking, the contacts in your ignition obviously aren't connecting right. Get that fixed first and see what problems continue.

Re: 92 Ford Escort - Possible Ignition Switch Problem

You are correct. The car continued to crank even after after the key was removed. I'll go ahead and change out the ignition switch. As far as the starter is concerned, I did buy a rebuilt one from a national autoparts chain so it is still under warantee. If I'm still having problems after I change out the ignition switch, I'll look into the starter. If you have any other advice I'll take it. Thanks for the help.

The smoke from under the steering wheel is a new problem... you will have to find out what burned up.
