Grand Prix..odd overheating

I don't know where to begin. I will be siting idle or traveling and the temp will climb, once it reachs a tick above 220. the low coolent light will come on for a second and go off and keep repeating this cycle. doesnt seem to get any hotter unless I am stopped. I noticed once that sequence started and the temp started dropping.

I am worried about the car overheating.

my first guess was the cooling fans were not spining because I have never seen them move from the spot I have put them in. recently I was going to scotch tape the blade to the top so if it turned on, it would break the tape, but should not move from set position if just traveling. jsut a way I thoguht of getting a definate on that. I know when the car is "hot" and doing that sequnece I have never saw the fans moving.

my second guess was the theromstat was sticking. and flushing back and forth at that seqence. this would explain to me the pulsing of the light.

I have checked the raditor and it is full all the time. to the top even. so i know it is someothing else other then that.

hopefully someone can tell me something that is simple so I can fix it by this weekend. I dont want to take it out of town because of this.

Don

The fans don't kick on until coolant temp exceeds 220. The secondary fan kicks on at 230+ or when the A/C is on Max. The cooling system on your car requires a special air-bleed proceedure, so if you've had the cooling system serviced lately (new t-stat, hose, etc...) there could be air trapped in the system. If the temp never gets higher than 220 sitting in traffic, there is nothing wrong.
