Serivce 4wd

What does it mean when the notice pops up "Service 4wd". My understanding is that it means to change the Transfer Case fluid. Well I did that recently and the light is message still frequently pops up. Anyone have any idea what it could mean? Do you have to reset it when you change the Transfer Case fluid???

I don't think it has anything to do with the oil changing, but I can tell you that if you are having problems with the electronic transfer case shifting actuator, it will cause the Service light to come on. This actuator doesn't only shift the transfer case in to 4WD (Hi and Lo), but if iyour truck is totally electronic (All Push Button w/Auto 4WD), it also has a 6 wire sensor on the actuator to tell the computer what position the actuator is in and that's what's lights up beside the selector swich on the dash. The connector can sometimes get dirty, and worse case, go bad on you. Just a few pointers. Let me know if I can help further.

Re: Serivce 4wd

I recently had the same problem with my '04 Silverado...
The transfer case module control had to be replaced.

Re: Serivce 4wd

Quite often it is the switch on the dash thats the problem. It also happens to be the easiest and cheapest fix.

Re: Serivce 4wd

Take it out of your dash, open it up and resolder the wire connections. Look for little cracks around the solder joints, that's the problem. It's easy...I did it to mine and it's works perfectly.

Re: Serivce 4wd

there is also the encoder motor...the actuator that shifts the transfer case between gears, and senses what gear it is in and such. This is an easy fix work wise, but i can't remember the cost of the part. see if you can get a code out of it....if autozone's scanner can't read it, or if it gives you a code but no explination, then post the code ####'s here, and we can figure it out from there.

Re: Serivce 4wd

could be a short to ground inside the encoder motor, or short to ground somehwere in the wiring.

Thumbs up Re: Serivce 4wd

SERIOUSLY! Before you do anything, I had that problem ("service 4wd") on my 00 z71. I took the switch out, and heated up the terminals on the back, and dropped some new solder in them . IT WORKED! They just have some bad connections I guess.

The "service 4wd" light had been going on and off intermittently for a long time. Then it decided to stay on. I did that fix, and it hasnt come on again for over 3000 miles.

Just to add... I did the same thing with my remote mirror button... worked for all but both mirrors "right tilt" function, for lack of a better term. Still cant get them to turn right...

Thanks to ALL who post here... y'all can save us all some serious .
