CATALYTIC Converters/Headers

As most of the people in non-specific know, I am in need of a replacement catalytic converter / x pipe or y pipe or h pipe (not sure the difference of each) basically the numbscull that had my mustang before me cut out the cat and i've got to replace it ( well, i don't have to because i'm in alabama, but i would like to restore the timing on it and it needs the o2 sensor back in place) i have some questions.

Hunting around i saw This
as well as

This

Basically my questions are

how do i know if i have long headers/shorty headers? can i run the x-pipe for a gt on a 3.8?

what's the difference on a y-pipe, x-pipe and H pipe?

quite a few questions, but i'd appreciate any help.

Thanks

Re: CATALYTIC Converters/Headers

Those two wouldnt fit your car, dont know much about the v6's, and if a gt mid pipe would fit but i do know that you will need a mid pipe for shorty headers, not long tube headers, and the difference between an x pipe and an h pipe is the shape of the connection between the to pipes the h pipe is for a better louder sound and an x pipe is for better airflow, but performance wise there isnt muchof a noticeable difference

Re: CATALYTIC Converters/Headers

A Y pipe is your stock exhaust set up, and X and H pipes are just aftermarket cross overs that wont do anything except change the sound a little. Your stock headers are exhaust manifolds and GT cross overs wont work on your car. But if you're going to get headers get LT's, shorties have shown a loss of power on stock V6's.

that's awesome, such a quick response. So basically get a Y setup. Why won't the GT Cross over? is it because of the dual exhaust setup origionally? or because of the different headers on the gt because of the v8?

silly questions, i know, but i'm still learning the basics of this car and hoping that this forum will help out greatly.

You can get a stock GT exhaust system to work on your car, but I'd imagine GT crossovers would be too small or long and wouldent bolt up.

Re: CATALYTIC Converters/Headers

Also the GT has a relatively wide motor and I doubt that the OHC motor on the V6 is that wide. I think that the GT's H and X pipes would be too wide to mount to the exhaust manifolds on your car, let alone lengthwise.

Re: CATALYTIC Converters/Headers

just search a little, there are plenty of parts for the 3.8 mustang. i dont think exhaust for a v8 will work on your car either. as far as y-pipe, x-pipe, and h-pipe. its not real critical which one you opt for. on some engines it is, but not this one. with the way the pulses come out of the engine, a good y-pipe is plenty efficient. an x-pipe does get the best flow, some say the an h-pipe sounds better... i dont really know on the sound.

Re: CATALYTIC Converters/Headers

Yeah sorry about the misprint...... I kind of contradicted myself by putting OHC...c is too close to v, and they mean total opposites in this case.
