About one year ago the Anti Lock light came on because my front right wheel stuck a decent size pothole and ruined the wheel bearing. I replaced the wheel bearing and the light went off for about 2 months and the light has been on since. I checked all of the fuses and relays and they all work. I dont know what else to check. i took off the front left tire and brake system to look at the bearing. I noticed a small black plastic object on top of the bearing. what is this? i took it out and cleaned off the crud that was on a little metal part. the metal part was also magnetic. is this a speed sensor? i cleaned off the left side and i will do the right side later today. but is this the only anti lock sensor or is there one inside the bearing? thanks for any info.

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
Welcome to AF, what you describe is the sensor, the reluctor ring is on the axle/or bearing hub. There are also 2 sensors in the rear wheel hubs, an abs function scanner will pick out the source of the problem and eliminate any guess work.

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
i had my local mechanic put the huge code scanner on it and it said left front wheel. so does that mean i need a new left front wheel bearing because i already cleaned off the sensor because of the crud that was on it. or do i need a new sensor?

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
If the scanner shows low or no speed reading then the sensor or wiring is the usual area, if the sensor is available seperately, (I think it is part of the bearing), then you could just replace that.

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
I assume the vehicle in question is the 92 Lumina in your profile. The ABS wheel speed sensor is not part of the hub on your car. The noise you are describing sounds like a hub bearing for sure, and the hub going bad can cause the ABS light to come on due to mis-aligning the reluctor on the CV axle shaft to the ABS sensor mounted to the spindle. That being said, just replacing the hub may or may not fix the ABS light issue. If the hub has enough free play to allow the reluctor to contact the wheel speed sensor, you may need one of those as well to fix all your issues.

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
what exactly do you think i will need for new parts? i know i definitely need a new wheel bearing, but did you mean that if th bearing was rubbing on the sensor then i will also need a new sensor? i will be getting the bearing fized today.

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
yes, you could also need a new wheel speed sensor. AC-Delco/GM part number is 10456116.

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
okay i got a brand new hub and the noise is gone now. there is still the ABS light though. i also cleaned off both speed sensors on the front wheels.

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
Did you scan it with an abs function scanner to look at abs codes and comparative wheel speed senor inputs as suggested, you will replace everything here without a proper diagnosis!!

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
when you replaced the hubs, how did you install the axle nut? Did you torque it to proper spec with a torque wrench, or just crank it down by hand or use an impact wrench?

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
i had the mechanic replace the front left bearing so i know it is on the right way. i had it scanned and the scanner threw back codes 11 and 31. code 11 said something about the ebcm making an error and code 31 said that two sensors are making errors. are there any speed sensors mounted on the transmission? he said the possibly one of the bad sensors is on the transmission.

There is no abs sensor in the trans, it should be scanned on an abs function scanner to look at wheel speed sensor inputs. Again, see my post of 10/22!

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
I posted on october 23 that i had the guy scan it with a huge scanner and i had two different ABS codes show up. One was code 11 which was EBCM failure and the other code was 31 which was speed sensor failure. is there a way that he can pinpoint which sensor so i can get this dumb thing fixed. im guessing that the scanner can show exactly which sensor. can it do that?

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
so that is pretty much what i have to do is have him try and pinpoint which sensor is failing? can an ABS scanner do that?

Re: Anti Lock light on Dash
Replace and/or check the indicated sensor, this can cause a false ebcm code, had this happen to my car.
