88 Grand Am few problems

Well i'll try to explain this the best i can, this grand am frequently stalls and dies when i am either slowing down to come to a stop, or when i am just sitting and idling. Following the stalling i am hearing pops coming from the tailpipe, on average on a 20 mile trip it will die 6 to 7 times and always is doing the popping sounds from the pipe. One day the pop was so bad it completely blew the side of my muffler apart. Another problem i am having is when i am cruising at low speeds, roughly 15 to 35 mph and not pushing on the accelerator at all the car will rev up and down, when i push on the brakes it will sometimes stop but usually it dies if i am braking, or i'll push on the accelerator and get it over 40 mph and it will stop doing it. So if anyone has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it!

If you would be so kind as to post the engine size that would be helpful. There are an assortment of items that can cause these problems.

The first thing to try is to unhook the plug for the torque convertor clutch and see if it stops this issue. If not look to the throttle position sensor as possibly being bad.
