Question cant find oil filter for 2004 grand am.. HELP!!

I just bought a 2004 Grand Am, 2.2 liter, about a month ago. The Change oil lite came on and my question is; I CAN'T FIND THE OIL FILTER TO CHANGE IT!!! I know this sounds stupid, but we looked and can't find the filter. There isn't a Chiltons book out yet. They only go up to 2000 models. I did read some where in here that it's attached to the engine???? Still cant see it....Please HELP!!!!

It's an internal oil filter, you can get to it from under the hood...it's on the driver side front of the engine under a black plastic cap with a 1-1/4" hex head molded on the cap. Kinda by the intake manifold if I do recall. Sorry for the not so great explanation but it's been awhile since I've been under the hood and the car isn't here for me to look at.

Re: cant find oil filter for 2004 grand am.. HELP!!

the oil filter is exactly where catback said it is. its on the top side of the engine, down the front of the block and to the right. Under the black plastic cap. It does take a 1 1/4" socket or you can use a crescent wrench. Take off the air intake tube and you have sufficient room to remove the cap. Dont tighten it down too hard though or youll never get it back off. The drain plug is a 15 MM socket/wrench underneath the car. Good Luck and welcome to AF.

Thumbs down Re: cant find oil filter for 2004 grand am.. HELP!!

Thanks SOOOOO much catback23 and Gooman18... I kept lookin at that part and asked my husband if that could be it and he kept sayin, no, it can't be.... now that we got that out of the way, do ya mind a "next question" ? How difficult tis it to do the spark plugs? I know they are under the scoop that holds the throttle cable? Am I right? or no ? Would you know the process for this job? I REALLY HATE not havin a book... Thanks again guys, maybe my husband will at least try my ideas once in awhile... We had our own race cars for years, so i'v been around alot of this stuff for while, but this car is alot different then any car we have owned... It seems things are backwards or upside down in there...

The plugs are under the ECOTEC cover on top of the engine. 4 10mm bolts if i remember correctly. If you really want a book, try autozone or advance auto parts and buy a Haynes Manual. It only goes to 2003 but there the same in 04. I have one and its helped me big time in the past. Good Luck.
