Question Lt1 Z28

I have a strange problem that I can not figure out! I have a 1994 Z28 with the LT1 engine. Recently I changed the thermostat and radiator cap out. Now I have an invisible leak! The car will start and run cool as hell! About 190 but driving down the road the low coolant light will come on. I shut off the car and restart it goes off. But here is the weird part, the water is low! What could cuase the water to be low? There is no leak! Water goes into the resivoir, could it be that it is not being sucked back into the radiantor? How woul dI check this?

Re: Lt1 Z28

You still may have a leak at the thermostat housing that gets burned off by the engine heat so you don't see it. You should still smell the antifreeze though.

Have the cooling system pressure checked, that's the only way to find your elusive leak.

I have that sucker run while crawlin around like a snake under, over and in it! And the amount of water that is missing is about 2-3 cups! So I would see that! But then again some is blowing out thry the overflow!

Re: Lt1 Z28

Did you open the bleeder screws when you put in the coolant cause if not you are creating very dangerous hot spots in the cylinder head and thats the reason for the level declining.

Re: Lt1 Z28

I would doubt a head gasket leak. It should be showing up in the exhaust or oil if it was blown.

I was diagnosing a car with an elusive coolant loss years back, we wound up removing one spark plug at a time, starting up the engine and watching the plug hole until we came to the one that blew out steam.

I think that you'd be best off doing a static pressure test. If that turns us negative, get some Solder Seal Block Saver and put that into the radiator. If you did have a minor internal leak, this will take care of it most of the time.

Re: Lt1 Z28

Thanx I will try that! But I did find that the overflow has a small pin hole up at the full hot line so that could a part of it!

Ummmm,

If I may, and not to sound like a smart-tart, I read the word water a handful of times in this thread. So, um, what did you put in it after you replaced the stat and cap?

Re: Lt1 Z28

ya, never run water in your car, water+metal=rust! And water can freez and boil so just uses antifreeze.

Whoa, easy there, I did state not to sound wise. I merely asked, just to be sure it was not purely water in the vehicle.

This "kid" happens to be a forum moderator asking you a simple question and thus if it were determined that the answer was it was just water, that would solve alot of troubleshooting and to the contrary of your hasty repsone, save folks alot of time, vs wasting it.

I was not "correcting' you, again, merely verifying. It has happened before, the exact same problem. a few days later it was finally pointed out that the car did in fact have staright water in it. So it's not to offend you, but again, to cover the basics and help us help you.

So on that note, welcome to AF as I see you just recently joined. However, if you want good advice, you need to slow down a bit and take into account we don't know the condition of your car, or the extenet of ability and resources you may or may not have.

I took it as an insult to my intelligence and still do! If you are a mod in here boot me cuz I do not wan to be apart of something where the mod makes smart ass remarks! Learn to ask question in that from not as a statement with a question mark at the end! No one else but you and that other "dude" said a word about coolant! Just you two trying to smarter than the "New Guy" So how else is one to take that? If you are smart enough o work on your car you are smart enough to know that water is a term that is used! Everyone else who read t understood but two! Kid refer to your intelligence level not your age! And I can see from your spelling that you are not! GOODBYE! To those in the know it was the overflow and sensor! Fix it! Thanx for the help and advise!
