OK.... so my rear main has been leaking since the motor was rebuilt. I finaly got sick of the driveway bed wetting incidents to i got the part and spent the afternoon putting it in. the old one was torn a lil. So i buttoned everything back up. And wouldnt you know, after driving it, eating, showering... and a few other things. I went outside, and wouldnt you know it, a nice puddle on the ground, same size as before. Actually. it wasnt on the ground, it was on a clean peice of cardboard i put down. Long story short, it still leaks. It's an 87 cherokee 4.0L. I cant think of anywhere else it would be leaking, i checked the valve cover, to no avail. and i cant see any seepage from the head gasket. i dont get it.....

Re: Rear main.... *kicks jeep*
When you installed the new seal, did you notice any burring or knicks in the crankshaft? Even a small seamly insignificant nick can tear the seal enough to leak.

Re: Rear main.... *kicks jeep*
It could just be some that was on the shaft or something. Clean everything up with a rag and see if it still leaks.
But yeah, if you tore the new seal putting it in, or there's a burr on the shaft, that could cause it to start leaking again.

Re: Rear main.... *kicks jeep*
Checked your oil filter adapter? There are three o-rings that will leak and will appear to be the oil pan / rear seal. Ask me how I know... My 4.0 has 265K and I have replaced them three times.
