Question 94 Fuel Pump Problem?

Well a little about my car. It's a 1994 Grand AM. It's a 3.1 Lt V6 front wheel drive with 198,000 miles. <--Ouch, a lot of miles...

The problem:

Soon after we got this vehicle the fip (fuel injection pump) fuse would blow every time it was warm outside <and> always when you were accelerating. (This is a 20 AMP fuse.) It would only do it a few times a week to start with, then it got worse and worse, until eventually it would pop when you would even shift it into gear. And then it hit rock bottom, and would blow every time you would even turn the key to start the car.
At this point we changed the fuel pump relay, and started to change the fuel pump itself. But we never actually changed the fuel pump thinking it was more than likely a wiring/electrical error. We then tried to find a short in a wire and found a ground that was not grounded properly and fixed this. It continued to have the problem. Blowing up to a 40 AMP fip fuse.
The weather is getting cooler here, and now the car seems to want to run. It has at least stopped blowing the fuse when you turn the key, or shift into gear. We have been trying to figure out what this problem could be.

Any ideas or experience with a problem like this?

It's really appreciated!
Thanks!

Re: 94 Fuel Pump Problem?

Welcome to AF !

Sounds like your fuel pump is dead.
Another problem is the wiring harness up by the tank sometimes the wires break and short out.

If it is broke wires use some connectors and some shrink tube wrap, but BE carefull with fire and heat around gas fumes its not pretty
They do sell a new wiring harness section to repair it also, if its bad that is.

Hope that helped !
