I got scammed at the tranny shop
The only shop service that I take my truck in for is transmission fluid changes due to thier ability to see possible problems with a complex part of the vechicle. I take it to Aamco. I had them changed the fluid and filter last week.
All I have done is a straight forward fluid change and filter. The last time i took it in before last week, was last year. Last year, they forgot to secure the bolt that goes to the crossmember support, so I put a nut on it and a dap of silicone on the bolt to make sure it would not come loose since the bolt and nut faces down. I went under there today to see thier work and they did not even touch it. The oil and dirty build-up on the pan and bolts do not have a smudge on them and the orginal silicone dap i put on the bolt is still there. Is it possible for the pan to be dropped without loosening that support bolt? I cant' believe a major company would charge for repairs and parts and not actually do the work. That's something you hear about on dateline NBC about small private shops. So does anyone know a way that my pan and gasket could have been changed without loosening that bold..did i get scammed or am i paranoid 1991 C1500 2WD 4.6L |

Re: I got scammed at the tranny shop
Alot of places are just using suction pumps and sucking the fluid out and refilling it, never touching the under side of the truck.. I've heard of that alot around here with the lube places and such

Re: I got scammed at the tranny shop
What does your invoice say that you agreed to pay for? Transmission flush, or did they charge you for a filter kit? I understand that the pan has not been removed recently.

Re: I got scammed at the tranny shop
If you went in for a filter & fluid change there is no way they can do that without dropping the pan. Check your invoice like justsaygo said the guy might have not heard you or not have wanted to hear you and just changed your fluid or you could be a victim of a scam and he charged you the whole seebang thinking this guy ain't the type to go crawlin under his truck and laid a gouging on you.

Re: I got scammed at the tranny shop
I changed the tranny filter on my '91 2wd...and it is possible to drop the pan w/o moving the support...but would be very difficult..cuz the support is in the way of a few bolts..but if you had the right tools u could get around it....but to remove the bolts and move the support would be much easier and quicker aswell...and Im not to fond of aamco, they rebuilt my tranny and not to long after the warranty on it was up..it started leaking from the front input shaft seal..

Re: I got scammed at the tranny shop
First off if it is the same shop you took it to last year you already know their work is questionable since they left a nut loose or off last time.
Second no matter how carefull the tranny pan will be smugged if it was removed. I have a 91 gm truck as well though mine is the 2500 HD and has the 4l80e I can just drop the pan no mounts to mess with at all. but either way if you ordered a filter change and the pan has to be removed and there should be signs of this, tool marks etc, also once the pan is off it would have been set down so the tech could clean out any debris inside the pan, there would logicly be marks on the bottom of the pan from surface it was set down on, etc, etc. My thought on this though is I would go back and demand a refund yes but not a chance in the world I would let them touch my vehicle again, not even to make past mistakes right, they have already shown you their colors. just my opinion. |

Re: I got scammed at the tranny shop
All is well. I was correct in being paranoid. I talked to the shop manager. They did not change the filter and gasket as billed on the invoice (for those who were curious if I looked..lol). I ordered a filter/gasket and fluid change and I did not get one. I paid for one but after speaking to the shop manager, he said they only did a fluid exchange with the vacum system by mistake. He claims the tech did not read the order correctly and that there were several chevys' there that day.
He offered to have it corrected, but im not going to waste another day off dealing with it. I have three days off a month and they already got one. So much for taking it to a major company for a simple filter change. I will go back to doing it myself. First time in 15 years i've had the truck and had something like this happen. Oh well...sooner or later. By the way, they over filled it...and it's leaking out of that small hole at the end of the yolk/spline going into the u-joint. Guess i will have to burn some tranny fluid or weld that pin hole up. Thanks for the lively debat men. |

Re: I got scammed at the tranny shop
As fuzzy implied, they seem t be prone to errors at this shop, so you might want to consider looking elsewhere.
Does the truck have the TH700-R4? Have you installed a drain plug in the trans yet? That makes fluid changes a lot easier. And, just for the record, what the heck is a "1991 C1500 2WD 4.6L" anyway? I thought the ½-tons in 1991 had either the 262, 305, or 350, and not a Cadillac engine. O.K., a few had a diesel, but that's still not a 4.6L. I'm confused (as usual). |
