My car is cursed...

Just when I think I'm done spending money on it.

Anyways, it happened Friday night in downtown Cleveland. I went to a concert and some time between 5:30 p.m. and 12 a.m. the fuckers broke out the rear passenger vent window of my car (1993 Toyota Corolla) and the rear driver side window of my dad's car (2003 Buick Regal). They got my brother's wallet out of my dad's car ($10). They stole my CD player ($200), practice guitar amp ($40) and the CD ($15). In the process of ripping out my radio they completely fucked up my dash board. They didn't unscrew the two screws holding it in, just pulled it until it came out, destroying pretty much everything in the process. So I filed a couple reports and obviously nothing will happen.

Aside from being pissed, I'm wondering wether it's worth my time to pursue any sort of legal action against the lot. There was no liability notice posted anywhere around the lot, so I'm thinking I could potentially get some money for damages, but the cop who filled out the reports said it's pretty common for cars to get robbed in that lot, which makes me think people have tried it before.

Anyways, opinions on the matter would be appreciated. And here's a few pics:

what i would do, which isn't exactly legal, is wait out there sometime. hiding in the shadows and wait for the theiving scum to trot along. then when they're about to break into a car...FUCK THEM UP!

Re: My car is cursed...

Dizamn. Thats the shitty. As far as legal action, you might as well save yourself the time and aggravation. Even if there was no sign posted, its generally assumed that a car left in a lot is to be protected by the owner of the car and not the lot.

Being the unemployed bum that I am right now I get to watch a lot of daytime court shows (gotta love Judge Milian and Judge Mathis) and in all the cases I've seen similar to yours they always rule in favor of the lot owner unless there was some sort of negligence that caused damage to the car

Re: My car is cursed...

WTF is the point of those little vent windows anyway? All they do is provide a noise free way or amatuers to break a window and help themselves to your stuff...

That's the plan...me and a few friends armed with baseball bats...if the cops don't catch them, I feel alright.

And thanks for the replies dudes...figured I'd get screwed on the deal, but can't hurt to ask.

Sucks that happened, but the lot probably can't be held responsible. Time to call your insurance company.

Once glaring question I have, though: Why, when parking your car in downtown Cleveland, at a concert, would you leave things in it? Your brother leaving his wallet is the stupidest thing I've heard for awhile.

When I'm parking in the open in a city, I make sure anything valuable is with me and not in the car. I've even left my car open on occasion so they don't have to break a window to get in.

I agree. You gotta take all your stuff out. Or at least hide it. I never leave my stereo face on and everything of value goes under the seats or in the trunk. And if you got a stereo system, NEVER pull up to the club or concert with the sounds up cause you're just letting thieves know which car they need to get in once you walk away.

I can't make that leap of faith. Plus most thieves go straight for the window anyway. I know 2 people that had their cars broken into when the doors were open. Plus, if somebody can just waltz into your car, they look like they belong there so if somebody saw em, they wouldn't think anything was wrong.

Point taken; nothing in sight is the best option though.

Re: My car is cursed...

My brother left his wallet in the glove box. The face of my stereo was in the glove box and my amp was in the trunk. They went through the glove box and trunk of both cars. It was a metal show, so there's a good chance the wallet could fall out half way through the show (it's happened to a couple of my friends), so me and my brother usually leave our wallets in the car...lucky for me I didn't that night for whatever reason.

On the subject of leaving the doors open, I think it changes the criminal offense to a lesser charge or something like that.

Angry Re: My car is cursed...

IMHO - you should go forth with a legal action against the lot.

1) You paid them, and in so doing, put your car in their care.

2) Go to the lot and advise them of this, while aware they are well-
acquainted with victimized car owners & will say what they'll say.

3) Get a small claim going at a local district court, explaining that you went to
the lot and got fluffed off. You do not need counsel; you walk into the
Clerk of The Court's office and get the legal help and counsel to which you
entitled.

Shoot first and ask questions later.

Anyways, I've pretty much decided to just get rid of the car as-is (they're still giving me $1000 for it) and pick up a newer one. Hopefully gonna pick it up Friday.

Re: My car is cursed...

Same thing happened to me Friday night. My car was parked at my friend's house in DeLand (smallest town in the world) and locked, and somehow people got into it, went through all my stuff, stole my purse and my $400 camera....and then locked it back, being the courteous thieves they were.

Re: My car is cursed...

our country needs a serious dose of morals...if i steal stuff, its like an extra breadstick from the dining hall at school. its a really shitty situation and if everything was hidden and locked like you said, i can't think of anything more you could do besides get an alarm system.
