Talking Ls Vtec or B20Vtec?

Which motor between a Ls Vtec or B20 Vtec would be a better to have as an upgrade?

it depends on what you're going to use it for and what kind of work you're going to do to it...

Re: Ls Vtec or B20Vtec?

I've read (aka no personal knowledge) that it's harder to resleeve a B20, because there isn't enough material for the sleeves to grab onto the bottom of the block (don't know the technical name for that part). So I'd say go LS/vtec. You could always bore it out 3mm if you resleeve it, and you'll have a stronger B20.

Re: Ls Vtec or B20Vtec?

you can get B20's resleeved out to an 89mm bore....that being said, i would much rather use an LS block because to sleeve and bore a B20 out to 89mm takes a lot of room inside the engine bore. There isn't a lot of sleeve material left at that point. If you're going to boost, this isn't the way you want to go. The only real application this has is in an NA car where you dont have to worry about ridiculous cylinder pressure.

B20 sleeved and bored to 89mm if you're going NA
LS sleeved and bored to an 83-84mm if you're boosting

----all of this provided you have the money to do that-----

Re: Ls Vtec or B20Vtec?

personally i think an EF would be best with the NA 14:1 89mm NA B20VTEC That would be a badass car...you could hit high 200's with that setup...I've seen a 15:1 86.5mm GSR with a wickedly ported head make just shy of 300whp...thats impressive for a streetable car!

Re: Ls Vtec or B20Vtec?

^I agree. The B20 definitely has potential to be a beast. My friend in florida built a Rex with a B20 vtec hitting mid-low 13s last I went with him to the track and I know he's not done with it. That thing moves pavement big time.

Re: Ls Vtec or B20Vtec?

then go with the b20. you'll get more torque. get a short geared tranny preferably a ys1(the best in my opinion)

Re: Ls Vtec or B20Vtec?

B20 VTEC w/ a YS1 tranny,.....if you can afford it, get some higher comp. pistons and build the B20 a little...

Re: Ls Vtec or B20Vtec?

I would say go with the b18 and put a b16 head, this is waht im planning on doing. I'm low on cash so im gonna swap the ls in and then buy the b16 parts plus cams piston and all the good stuff then get all the head work done at the same time. After that i should be around 200hp if not over so i would say thats the way to go plus its cheaper.

Re: Ls Vtec or B20Vtec?

Tolerances are extremely tight on a B20/Vtec. If you do go this route, you need to have a reputable Honda guy build it. The LS/Vtec is better in my opinion just for the reliability reasons. The B20/Vtec would have good torque though. I would do an H22 over a B20 if torque is your desire. H22 are cheap and despite what people say, they are not much heavier than a b-series motor. They just sit in the engine bay at a different angle. For drag racing, H22 rip. But like I said, the LS/Vtec is the best bet in my eyes. Plus I have one that makes over 200whp.
