crush vs. mandrel piping
welps, on my mission to tubro, im callin all these muffler shops near where i live. none of the big chains tend to to custom 3'' mandrel bent piping.
so in otherwards, tell me whats the big difference between mandrel bent and crush bent.

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
Well, crush bent piping is just that, the use a press to bend it into the desired shape, which leaves impressions in the piping... it's not a huge deal but not the greatest for absolute performance.
Mandrel bent is done in a machine that gently bends the piping leaving very little impressions inside the piping, making it ideal for performance. The impressions, if you haven't guessed... cause excessive amounts of back pressure.

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
I will know more in about 3 weeks.
I have true duals, but they are crushed bends. So I am putting cutouts at each header....and I will re-dyno with them open. Somewhere in between would be mandrel bands.

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
lol. that works. i was thinking of going that route, cutout, but my cousin had one and it raddled a little when it was closed. So like a dumbass he put rubber on the open/closeing flap and broke it. i know that they arent expensive, and worth it, but the electronic ones are pricy, and the manual one is what my cousin had, with the cable open/close feature.

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
I am going manual.
I can't see spending a decent amount of $$ for something that will eventually stop working thanks to carbon build-up. Those butterfly electric ones are a pain. I will get a video clip up.

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
when you do it just make sure you have as many 180 degree turns in the exhaust as possible, those are great for flow. whats even better is when you make sharp cuts rather than bends.
but seriously, if you dont have to get emmissions checked, just put a straight pipe on instead of a cat, you dont need that damn thing. all its good for is getting plugged up. |

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
see, i live in a place where they do take emissions, otherwise the whole test pipe would have been in for the longest, and i wouldnt be having this thread made. its called downpipe exhaust, the pipe coming from the downpipe would be a mandrel 45 degree straight back, and ending up ending towards the middle of the car, like the middle of the underside. but i do have emissions. that really sux. i think imma just go 2.5 regualar catback, and when the time comes, put a cutout at the end of the downpipe, one going through the 2.5 exhaust, the other just allowing it to freely flow out right under the engine.
thanks for your input guys.

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
Go with mandrel, no question. A crush bent 3" system would be like having a 2.5" mandrel bent system. Those crushes add quite a bit of back pressure. There is quite a difference, trust me; I saw a huge difference on the GTC when I went from the stock crush bent system to the full mandrel bent system.

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
there is no place by me unless i would like to drive 100+ miles to chicago....apparently i must order the bends off the internet. so this is most likley not going to happen any time soon unless i can mail you cash and u use credit card. my whole project is on hold because i cant order parts. what a bummer..

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
I had to order mine too. Not many places have mandrel benders.

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
you realize you can order mandrel bends from places like summit or i believe JCwhitney...just find someone who can weld them on. you can use 3" intercooler piping bends if its stainless steel.

Re: crush vs. mandrel piping
well...i might as well update this thread, as it's my own. resurrection thread ftw! no really, a lot of threads have been on the resurrection these days.
i just got my HKS catback i bought installed. its about 2.36'' all the way through. quick sound clip. its not too loud. i like it. and dont worry. i just turned the car off for the vid. so the engine is fine. Chiquae07's new HKS exhaust i guess i need an update thread. i'll do it sooner or later.
