Re: 06 civic si vs 06 cobalt ss

For performance and handling, the Cobalt SS wins. It beat out the Mustang GT on a track in the most recent C&D. Its probably better for modding because of the F/I. For engine build quality, interior quality, ride quality, and overall reliability the Civic is better. The Civic was designed to be alot like the RSX, a well built, comfortable car that is pretty quick for its price range, but not #1.

If you are looking for a daily driver, I'd get a Civic Si, if you are looking for an inexpensive performance car, I'd get the Cobalt SS. I would also look into a Dodge SRT4 and a VW GTI, both cars compete well in this class.

Re: 06 civic si vs 06 cobalt ss

The Si has the SS beat in everything except for maybe engine power. As for reliability, refinement, and everything else that matters...the Si wins. And it's not that far behind on power either.

And to play devil's advocate...if you're considering these two, you should also look at the VW GTI and Mazdaspeed 3

The SS has been shown to be a bit underrated in horsepower, so it really does have a pretty significant advantage over the Si. It has also been shown to handle better. I didn't even think to mention the MS3, thats another great option.

Re: 06 civic si vs 06 cobalt ss

if ya want all performance, go for the cobalt. the si, while fairly capable in and of itself, is not quite up to the task compared to the cobalt ss, the ion equivalent, the srt-4, golf gti and now the upcoming mazdaspeed 3. though i'd find it hard to pass up the si if these are the choices. i think it makes up for its power disadvantage pretty well in other important areas. go test drive both.

Re: 06 civic si vs 06 cobalt ss

I can't argue performance but the new civics are great cars. They look great and drive great. Quality is top notch. I mean I traded a mustang in on it (and thats a huge power deficit.)

Yeah the SS is underrated. But I would never say it stomps anyone into the ground. Here's an article about the GTI, SS, Si, and a TRD supercharged tC.

http://autobytel.espn.go.com/content...le_id_int/1971

CLIFF NOTES:

VW GTI vs. Honda Civic Si vs. Chevy Cobalt SS vs. Scion tC (w/TRD blower)

Ranked on several categories:

Powertrain (in order of 1st to 4th): GTI, SS, Si, tC
Street Driving: SS, GTI, Si, tC
Track Driving: SS, Si, GTI, tC
Comfort: GTI, Si, tC, SS
Quality: GTI, Si, tC, SS
Design: Si, GTI, tC, SS

Final Point Rankings:
4th - tC 6.4 out of 10
3rd - SS 7.1 out of 10
2nd - Si 7.3 out of 10
1st - GTI 8.0 out of 10

Driver Opinions/Picks:

Blackett: GTI, Si, SS, tC
Chee: GTI, Si, tC, SS
Perry: Si, GTI, SS, tC
Wardlaw: GTI, Si, SS, tC

With that info go with a GTI or if you want something a little more practical and less on insurance go with a jetta GLI

Re: 06 civic si vs 06 cobalt ss

Both of the two mentioned VWs are considerably more expensive than the cars in the topic though. I looked into a GTI, although they are a nice car, they are quite pricey.

That is true when you start to add options, but if you can do without things like DSG and a leather interior it keeps the price competitive. The GTI comes with alot of standard features that the others don't. When I priced the Si, GTi, and SS/SC with similar options they came in pretty close to each other.

Yeah...keep yourself clear of leather and DSG and you can still make out like a bandit. If you only get DSG and stay w/cloth...it wont be that bad. 23k or so.

And yes...lots standard features missing on other cars. I cross shopped the GTI w/the MCS and I hated that on the MCS I had to pay extra for multi-disc CD changer, HID's, and 6 airbags. I said F that!

Re: 06 civic si vs 06 cobalt ss

The GTI I was looking at was 24000 and it didn't have leather, it was also a manual trans. The car was really nice and all but after taxes and tags you are talking 26000 or so. At that price range there are pretty many performance cars to choose from and I don't know that the GTI is at the top.

I think we had this conversation b4...but obviously the sports cars at 26k will probably put you in another insurance bracket and wont get as good gas mileage as the GTI would...ie the 350Z base model, Mustang GT.

Anyways, I got my GTI (6MT) for about 20,800 w/no options other than the Monster Mats. If it didnt have leather, it probably was a Package 1...which is sunroof and sat radio. If you can live w/o the sunroof, sat radio is only 370 bux as a stand alone option.
