alternator problems

I think my truck's rpm range has been down because my alternator may be bad. Whenever i do get up to 4000 rpms or higher my battery light turns on (like its not getting a charge from the alternator. Tell me if u think this is the problem.

Re: alternator problems

That or the battery, anyway just disconnect the red wire from your battery's terminal while the truck is on. The car should stay on if your alternator is functioning properly. Other than that I don't really know what to say.

Re: alternator problems

That is not a good idea on a vehicle that is computer controlled. All it takes is one spike of voltage to fry the computer and it is an expensive fix. It is possible the belt is slipping causing the light to come on at higher rpm's. Best thing to do is have it checked by a competent technician.

Re: alternator problems

A good alternator shop will test for free if you take it in provided you let them repair it. I took one in with a bad rectifier and they fixed it for $55.00 and the parts store wanted $128.00 for a rebuilt. This was a low mileage alternator.
