Unhappy 96 Firebird cutting out when running

Hi guys.. The most scary thing has just happened to me. Was doing about 70Mph on the Motorway and the car just cut out!! Pulled over. Popped bonnet and checked fuses on drivers side. None blown or anything. Made sure all were in and engine restarted fine.

Same thing has happened again and seems to be something to do with that fuse box!! Any ideas what could be wrong? Im scared to drive the bird in case she keeps cutting out!

Re: 96 Firebird cutting out when running

The symptoms that you are describing would tend to indicate more of a chance of the ignition module being suspect, rather than fuse box. I'm curious how you came to the conclusion that the fuse box might be the problem. Sometimes, without use of a scope, it can be very difficult to accurately diagnose a faulty module due to the sometimes intermittent nature of the problem. Often (but not allways) a check engine light will be triggered due to a detected misfire, and it will be easier to diagnose. Sometimes, you end up just having to replace it to eliminate it from the list of possibilities. I have had a few cars with defective modules actually test to be good modules....talk about a headache to figure out! Sometimes (rarely) blind replacement is the only option. Best of luck to you.

Re: 96 Firebird cutting out when running

Came to the conclusion it was the fuse box because a couple of months ago she cut out on me and just wouldnt restart. Starter was turning over but engine not firing up. Checked fuses and one had blown. On replacing that fuse everything was fine. So when it cut this time the first place i headed was to that same fuse as the symptoms were identical. However fuse wasnt blown this time. But i did notice that by touching/ applying presssure to the fuse box would cut the engin when it was running. Had a fiddle with the wires running into the fuse box and she has been running ok for the time being so maybe it was just a loose wire?
