cut outs

hey all im putting a new exhaust in my 1968 el camino its gonna be a 2.5" system and i wanna put some cut outs on it the electrics are way too expensive some im lookin for some cable release ones the only ones ive found are made by mr.gasket but they are made of cast iron which im pretty sure can't be welded on correct me if im wrong also they are only 2" in diameter so you see my problem so if any one has any experience with these or have any other suggestions it would be apreciated thanks in advance

Re: cut outs

The cast ones canot be welded in the normal sense, ......but they can be brazed (brass welding rod with an oxy-acetylene torch)

I have used brazing to secure an exhaust system several times and when done properly, it is very strong.

Otherwise, you would have to use 2 inch inside diameter pipe and make sure it fits snugly over the cast iron housing and clamp it down.

As you suggest, decreasing a 2.5 inch system to accomodate a 2 inch cut out makes no sense.

However, IMO a cut out is not necessary.

Generally, a 2.5 inch dual system with decent mufflers will have lots of flow. Cut-outs will just add a hell of a lot of noise, (and possible headaches like unwanted police attention, complaints from neighbours, etc) with no appreciable power increase.

Re: cut outs

hows about just running straight pipes all the way back? a buddy of mine has an S-10 that has a 305 or a 350 dropped in (dont know which, too lazy to run the codes), hell it might even be a 400, but anyways, he has the exhaust running straight. back both pipes have no muffler or nothing. it actually is not all that loud unless you stomp the gas. you can have a conversation while normally driving and everything
