I just bought a kenwood headunit and was installing it when i noticed that the ring around the headunit does not clear the opening that the plastic dash in the car has. Is it just suppose to be behind it or should i cut out some of the plastic on the dash? thanks

Re: New aftermarket headunit
If you ran into the same problem I did, you'll find that the trim ring around the player and the dash trim overlap. If you are lucky the trim ring will be low enough that it will just touch the dash trim. If you're not lucky, like me, you'll have to sand the dash trim to give you the little bit of extra clearance you'll need.

Re: New aftermarket headunit
This is a very odd problem..all aftermarket head units should fit perfectly in your dash when installed with a dash kit. The outer trim of the head unit does not make contact with the actual dash opening, it will fit into the seperate kit. I should have asked this first, but is this a single or double din size deck? A double din is the same size as the factory radio and may not need the kit

Re: New aftermarket headunit
Yes it is a single din size headunit. Its a kenwood. The ring hits the dash part i could leave it with the ring around the headunit but it pushes out the dash. Yes normally when you put in an aftermarket radio it sticks out farther than the normal one but in this case it won't clear the opening of the dashing meaning the hole in the dash plate is not big enough. I am not sure what i am going to do yet. I took the ring off but i looks bad with out it. thanks

Re: New aftermarket headunit
Is this the 95' LeSabre you have listed in your pro? The 95's all have double din size dash openings, so a single din aftermarket should need a kit because it'd be too small, not too big as you are describing?

Re: New aftermarket headunit
This is EXACTLY the same thing that happened to me. With the installation kit the trim ring around the headunit makes contact with the dash trim and pushes it out slightly. IMO just enough to look bad. If you take the trim ring off it leaves a large ugly gap that shows the metal mounting sleeve and it looks like hell.
Like I said in my last post I sanded down the backside of the dash where the trim ring overlaps until the dash trim didn't stick out far enough to be noticeable.

Re: New aftermarket headunit
What brand dash kit are you using? I used a scosche brand from walmart (about 10 bucks) and mine fits perfectly with no other mods needed.

Re: New aftermarket headunit
well i got mine to work. The ring around the kenwood wouldn't fit because it was too wide. However the kit came with a new plastic ring that goes around the headunit that is cut down some so it clears. Once i got that one on it fit fine. Although the one with the kit was black and the one with the headunit was sliver which i liked better; i am happy that i got it to work and it looks good. thanks guys
