performance upgrades?

ive got a 93 olds cutlass supreme, with the 3.1 L v6, and i wanted to know if there were any ways of getting more power out of this baby, i dont want to go all out and try and push a shit load of power, i just want to add a few more ponies and a tad more torque, thing is, i want to try and keep it looking stock, i was thinking intake and exhaust will probably help me out alot, any other ideas out there? and of course i was thinking doing some work on the brakes too, maybe suspension, i guess u can say i want to trick this thing out, but come on, there are limits, and i dont want to be known as the idiot who did all that. just some upgrades, you know, for fun.

Re: performance upgrades?

really, sounds good, only i cant find anything for my car. nothing that seems to fit, i was thinking get some pipe, like soft silicon or something, something with no sharp bends, and all smooth on the inside, i thought that might do something.

Re: performance upgrades?

looks like a usefull thing, im probably going to get it, i can see how its a better intake, but no so much cooler is it, simply because its right between a battery and radiator hose, as well as a radiator and the exhaust manifold, but you say you can notice more power, how much more, like does it feel like 10 times better, or does it just feel like it pushes the car a little faster then otherwise.

Re: performance upgrades?

If you took the after-market intake plumbing and the stock plumbing and heated them up, then threw them into the freezer, you'd notice that the after-market (presumably aluminum) plumbing would cool at a much faster rate. The density of each of these materials is what determines the ability to shed or absorb heat.
This should answer your question about the intake being in between the rad hose and the battery. No worries, the cool intake charge will actually keep the aluminum intake plumbing cooler. Cooler air, being more dense, contains more oxygen, and theoretically creating more power.
Your car might also have an I.A.T sensor (intake air temp sensor). the IAT though tells the computer whether this is warm air (low volume) or cool air (dense high volume). I'd be curious to know where the IAT would be placed in the after-market plumbing..
I think the upgrade is a good idea. I also think that since your going to put more air in, you ought to invest in a high-flow cat and muffler. The over-all diameter of your exhaust should increase as well.
If you have a 93, you might want to invest in some new stock components, like a new MAP sensor, ignition coils, 02 sensor, knock sensor, TPS, etc. If you want peak performance, these monitors need to be in peak shape.
Lastly, you think your nutty for wanting to upgrade your 3.1? Look at my reply to your question.. don't feel bad... I'm a car freak

Re: performance upgrades?

i know im crazy, but im still unsure about how overboard im going with this thing, for all i know i might just add a cold air, and get a high flow cat and mufflers thats it. i need to replace the cat and mufflers anyway, as for overall size i think i have 2.5 diameter right now, so that should be fine i think. and i like cars thing is about this car is i like it, im just doing stupid things to it like all this crap. but who knows if i'll actually follow through with it

Re: performance upgrades?

The intake is a great idea!

I have a 95 Cutlass Supreme, and I'm putting a dual exhaust system, a new catalylictic converter. I also have replaced the transmission with a much better gear ratio, and replacing my wires & plugs too.

I'm repainting it glossy black, putting on a spoiler with the 3rd brake light in the spoiler, and 17" rims.

If you like the 60 degree site, try this one. Reason being, you might find a way to satisfy that burning urge to soop up the family car and get in shit by the wife... older Oldsmobiles are good too! Like the 85 Cutlass Supreme for example... talk about cheap cars to buy... no e-test needed, and face it.. they look bad ass.. raw..
