GE Versus FE

I was comparing heads today and I was dumb founded at how much bigger the ports where on the GE versus that on the FE I mean I knew they were bigger but I didn't know they were that much bigger. My question is, they have so many aftermarket internals you can get for the 3sgte alltrac engine, why haven't they started putting together 5sgte forged internal kits, I mean I know you can get them custom made, but to put together a kit of forged internals is like $1600 for this engine, versus the 3sgte you can get kits for like 7 or 800. I mean both blocks are iron blocks, just the 5s is slightly bigger, so why not put together forged internals for the 5s, use the ge head and turbo it with forged internals. Is there something I am missing why the 5s can't compare to the 3s? I mean you can swap the heads right?

Re: GE Versus FE

no one cares about the 5sfe and not many think off putting the 5s block with forged internals with a ge head for basically the best 4 cyl toyota engine you can build.

Re: GE Versus FE

well I think I'm gonna do it, send in for them to custom make me some rods and pistons it will take some time to save up for but I talked to JE today, and the guy said that if somebody puts together a successful engine that how he put it "works" then they will consider producing that set up. It just makes me really madd I have this 5s block with such potential if somebody where just to put out the parts for it. For now I am going to stick the FE head on it, with stocked internals, run 10 psi of boost get the numbers, and then swap the head to a GE and note the difference, and I have a feeling its going to be a pretty big difference.

Re: GE Versus FE

what kind of engine management are you using? i am sure you are aware of the wiring issues with a ge head onto the 5s block right?

Re: GE Versus FE

Yeah I am aware of it, i'm an electronics major, I am actually in the middle of building the megasquirt 2 ecu, with my electronics back ground building the ecu for me is a sinch its mapping it out thats gonna probably kick my but around for a while til I figure it out, but yeah I'm not 100% aware of the wiring issues I knew there was an issue but I haven't looked into resolving it yet. Like I said I'm gonna stick with the FE head for now, see what I run in numbers after the engine is built, then I'll start doing some research as to how to fix that wiring problem for the GE head. Cutting and soldering is kind of my thing so I'll research it just before I swap the heads and I've got all the pin outs for the ecu so I can tie it into the megasquirt harness. lets just hope I am just as good at building engines as I am building circuits lol. My goal really is just to build like you said earlier the best 4 cylinder toyota engine on the road, and its going to take quite a bit of time before all is accomplished but I think it will pay off in the end.

Re: GE Versus FE

yeah I don't have a ton of cash thats why the project is going to be taking so long, plus I'm gettin married in june, thats why I bought so much of this stuff now, and pretty much just lived on oreos and cereal lol. The only thing in this whole project I am really worried about is the fuel injectors they are 550 cc, and I know for what I'm set up for they are too big, but I'm kind of hoping with that megasquirt ECU, and a fuel pressure regulator i might be able to tune that what do you think??
Also I got my new head gasket the other day I went with a 98 camry gasket, multilayer steel head gasket, wow that thing is beefy I like it. But anyways just let me know what you think about those injectors if I am S.O.L or if you think I can get away with it, with the set up I have.

Re: GE Versus FE

sweet, I thought someone else was building up a 5SGTE, nice to know another person is taking on the project =D I forget though, I thought one of the issues with major power from a 5S was its bottom end. Do you think you'll have any issues?

Re: GE Versus FE

oh heck yeah I'll have issues, I plan on it, like 1700 issues, cause thats what its going to cost for the internals, but I'm hoping that in the future everyone will thank me because I talked to JE and explained to them if you took the 5s block built it up with forged internals, and then put toyotas GE head on it with a big ass turbo nice fuel injectors, and of course good fuel pump and a fully tunable ecu of course not sparing much expense as you can tell, it would be the best toyota 4 cyclinder in the world. The problem is, there seems to be so many people that think the 5s block is aluminum not sure where they got that idea. but JE has such an affordable kit for the 3s block that I'd like to see that kit for the 5s block so not 100% sure that it will go through but a guy there told me that if I put together a good motor then they would consider producing pistons for that engine, so heres hoping. Its just in my own personal opinion the 5s block gets shunned out a lot, and I really want to take this in stride. Start with a basic rebuild with stock pistons, and rods, with a basic ct26 turbo, walbro fuel pump and venom injectors with a megasquirt ecu. and push it a little bit more then what "normal"
people would do. run it like that for a while get some numbers, and prove that even stock the 5s block is a pretty impecable engine. Then rip it apart again drop in the new internals, and the GE head, and a bigger turbo and really show what it can do. Thats what i'm hopin to do anyways.

Re: GE Versus FE

I hope you do it too, since so many people do dog the 5S and it's only because no one is building one up completely i guess. Can't wait to see how your build up turns out =D.

Re: GE Versus FE

yeah I Can't wait either but you guys better pull up a recliner and a tub of popcorn cause its gonna take a long time, I'm not rich, just to stubborn to give it up. so it will happen it is just going to take a while. I am however looking forward to the build that I have right now and just seeing what I can squeeze out of stock internals just by tuning that megasquirt ECU. Has anyone mapped the 5sfe engine out with a megasquirt yet?

Re: GE Versus FE

most poeple dont do it becuase its a wast of money unless your buildling a pure drag car with the intent of over 500 hp

do not use the 5sfe block, shittyer oil passageways then the 3sgte, if you really feel like having a "5sgte" use a 5sfe crank and 3sgte rods and pistons. heres one thats been done before

http://www.jekylhyderacing.com/HydeMods.htm

good luck, total project will be well over $5000 more around $10,000 after the proper fuel system and upgrades
