Unhappy A/C Unit

Hey guys,
Just got a 2004 525i and new to this forum..I really enjoy the car so far but I have 1 problem with it..I'm not sure if this is normal but my a/c unit will not kick in right away at times after I start it..I would start my car, turn the a/c on and it will blow out fan air instead of cold air for like 5 minutes..Then after, it will start cooling and be normal..It usually happens in the morning when the car hasn't been used for a while..Is this norml that the compressor doesn't kick in till 5 minutes or so?? It is pretty hot on Guam and I am sweating badly..Can anyone gove me any insight on this??!!

My 2000 540i works almost the same way as yours. Notice I said almost because mine would blow fan air for about 1 minute or so, not 5 minutes as you indicated on yours. I'd say it's normal.

This post was started by another person with another problem.
Start a new post in the proper forum and give us all of the info.

Tips on getting a good answer to your questions.
People trying to answer your question do not have a crystal ball.
So give them all of the info you have like year make and model and engine and transmission.
Also service cars engine and transmission service history or any recent repairs or problems.
Also a description of your problem and what it is doing or not doing.
If you have codes give up the code no.
And remember a code does not say replace the part but only points to the problem that you have to check out.
So to better help you give up all of the info you have on it.

Okay, I guess 5 minutes is stretching it..Maybe 3 minutes or so..but it seems like forever when you are hot..What about the rest of you BMW owners?? Do you guys have the same problem??

Re: A/C Unit

I also live in a hot place, Georgia USA, and AC systems really struggle around here in the summer. It is very normal for it to take some amount of time to feel "cool" air coming out of the vents. One reason is that the ducts are a hot as everything else and the cool air will initially feel hot when it comes out of the vents until two things happen.

One: the vents and ducts themselves are hot, and the air in there is hot, it takes a bit of time 1-2 minutes to "overcome" this built up heat in the physical system....

Two: the compressor has to start working, and cycling the refridgerant through the system. The air has to start flowing over the condensor coils to remove the heat from the refridgerant. Fans initially do this before the car starts moving. The outside air is hot, so it is not efficient at removing the heat from the system. On hot days in Savannah, my AC does not really work well until I am up to speed driving down the road, moving the maximum amount of air over the condensor coils, therefore removing the maximum heat from the system....

On really hot days I have been known to start the car, and run the AC for a while before I even get in the car. This helps, but like I said above, in hot places, the AC doesn't even really begin to work well until you get moving down the road....

If it takes 5 minutes for your AC to get "really cold" and you live in a really hot place... then I would say be thankful that it works at all!

Hope this helps....

Re: A/C Unit

Hey, that really does help..Just knowing that others are experiencing this too..It just made me wonder since my other car (97 Acura 3.2TL) didn't take that long..So I thought it was unusual for a higher end car to take that long..It's too bad..That would be the only fault so far that I have with my 5 series..*knock on wood*
Thanks for the reply..and by the way, I live on Guam and Guam gets really hot..not to mention my car is black so it is even hotter...
