Engine Cooling Fan Cycles Too Often

1998 Windstar
3.0 liter engine
75k Miles

Recently I've noticed the engine cooling fan running more than it used to but the temp gauge doesn't go above 1/2 way. The gauge will drop slightly below half way to allow the fan to cycle off but it will come back on very shortly. The engine does seem to get to operating temp very quickly.

Could this be the t-stat sticking closed either fully or partially? Any other ideas welcome?

Could also be the AC compressor if the coolant is low. If it is low, you should hear the fans kicking on/off at very fast cycles. This will also happen if the heat is turned on as it also uses the clutch in the ac.

Re: Engine Cooling Fan Cycles Too Often

Hi

Take a look at this thread regarding the CCRM (constant control relay module). At least on the circa '96 models it controls the fans. On the 96's it is located on the front wall of the engine compartment near the antilock brake module.

Best of luck

Re: Engine Cooling Fan Cycles Too Often

Quick update. When I checked the engine, the fan operation was normal. The fan comes on & cools & cycles normally with or with out the a/c-defroster-heater on. The fan does seem to be louder than it used to be but it is still functioning properly.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Engine Cooling Fan Cycles Too Often

I had the same problem with mine. The fan would come on almost within seconds of starting the engine. I checked the coolant sensor relay as well as the temperature sending sensor. You may have one or even two.On my 98 windstar they are located at the water inlet housing on the engine block. That's also what holds the thermostat. It also can cause the fan to turn on right away if it's stuck closed.
