Question 1995 reving up problem

I have a 1995 Escort with the 1.9 L engine and Manual Transmission. The car has about 328,000 KM on it. Lately it has developed a problem that has me stumped.
While slowing down, the engine will suddenly start speeding up with out pushing the gas pedal. The only to stop it is shut off the ingition switch and restart the car. It will then be fine for a few days. Also reciently the "check engine " light flashes on the goes off again right away and will do this 3 or 4 times in a hour. It does not seem to come on when the above problem happens though.

Any help would be appreciated

Re: 1995 reving up problem

The usual cause of high rpms like this is a faulty IAC.

The Idle Air Control valve sits on top of the throttle body and is about the size of a couple D cell batteries. Some people have been able to clean it up and reuse it, others simply replace it.

It can be romved very easily... pull yours off and try tp clean it up a bit on the inside. If you notice an improvement, either replace it or try your luck to see how long it lasts

I believe the MAF sensor can cause similar problems. Unplug it from your airbox and do the same thing with it... clean it up or replace it.
