98 Dodge Dakota
Is there any way to make these get better fuel economy? They only get like 16 miles to the gallon around town.

Re: 98 Dodge Dakota
The DAKs are heavy (over 4000lbs), that is part of the reason why the mileage is so bad in town. The auto trans that they use for the V6 is also known for high parasitic loss. My brother in law has a 2000 with a v6 and 5-speed and gets about 18mpg in town. I would expect that 16mpg with an automatic would be on par for the size of the vehicle. If you want better mileage, you need a vehicle (any vehicle) that is lightweight. They don't make lightweight vehicles any more. All of the FED regulations for crashing contribute to heavy vehicles. My '80 Plymouth 1/2 PU only weighed 2500lbs and my '83 Dodge Rampage weighs 2200lbs. I get about 24mpg with the Rampage in town and it has a Auto and a Carb. I'm in the process of overhauling it and converting it to Multi-Point fuel injection. I expect to get even better mileage, but the project is going to cost me $7000 by the time I'm done. It's still cheaper than buying a new truck though.
