How to test your windsheild!

Dunno how true it is...but funny nevertheless

Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, alltravelling at maximum velocity.

The idea was to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with
airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields. British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains.

Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers.

When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken
hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's backrest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow. The horrified Brits sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the US scientists for suggestions.

NASA responded with a one-line memo: "Defrost the chicken."

It is funny but I think it's one of those urban myths.

I've heard it before with the Russians being the one with the frozen chickens.

We used to have a spud gun around somewhere. It could launch a potato a considerable distance. Powered by trusty aerosol engine start spray with a special additive with ignition provided from a piezoelectric starter, we managed to launch a potato over 300 metres (admittedly it was at an altitude of 1800m above sea level).

We didn't repeat at this location as the resounding echo probably wasn't particularly clever at an avalanche prone mountain resort and it seemed to garner some unwanted attention.

Similar guns were popular for a while by shore-based fisherman to launch their lines out but the police issued warnings about offences under our firearms act...

The Chicken gun part is true, and not only NASA use them. All the Major aircraft manufactors have at least one as well.
Iv seen Video footage of a chicken being shot into a jet engine intake to test how it would hold up.

However I would imagine the rest of the story is made up. :smoker2:

My friend and I made one exactly like that except we used a mixture of Oxygen and MAPP gas (Used in my blow torch). This thing was f*cking insane. We almost killed ourselves because we didn't attach the rear cap on correctly.

So did my friends in college. I wasn't there to witness it, but my best friend told me all about it. It went over a field and then over some trees, into a conspicuous cluster of houses. Friggin' cool. Oh yeah - they only fired it once because it was just a little too powerful and addictive.

Ths story is cute, by the way. But frozen chicken my ass - nobody's that dumb (...right?) :right:
