2000 dead jimmy! never had a problem, now it's dead!
I own a 2000 GMC Jimmy that I bought about 5 months ago. Up until yesterday, I loved it. Everything is great on the truck. 82,000 miles. I started the truck yesterday, after letting it sit for about a week, it ran for three seconds then shut off. Now there is no power to any part of the vehicle. The battery tests good. There is power going to the alternator and going to the starter. No power going to the fuse box though. Once in a while, I hear the truck try and work. It makes a few clicking noises, especially from underneath the fuse box on the little black box marked "starter".
Is it possible that the starter is bad? I have power going into the starter but nothing coming out. Any help here wold be huge. |

Re: 2000 dead jimmy! never had a problem, now it's dead!
Okay, so I pulled the starter wires off. Thinking that if there was a short in the starter, I'd be good with it disconnected. Still nothing. Also, I forgot to add that the key will not return to it's off position and they are stuck, and I cannot move the transmission from park even when the key is in the on position. When I hear the occasional clicking noise and half of a "door open with keys in the ignition" chime, I can then pull the key out of the ignition. Help me out here folks. PLEASE.

ALSO, I wanted to add that whatever the silver box on the passenger side located behind the kickpanel is, that also makes the clicking noise occasionally.

Does this Jimmy have an alarm system on it or remote starter?

It only has the factory security system in it. That was one of my thoughts though. Perhaps it is something to do with that.

Have you got horn or lights or blower motor operation. Start at battery and work back to fuse panel with a test light and look for lose of power. MY

I have no power whatsoever throughout the vehicle. No lights, horn, acessories, dash lights, gauges...etc....The gauges do appear to be stuck in some sort of mid point positon. Occasionally, when Im hearing the clicking noises, the gauges move around...up and down...then they freeze halfway.

Check battery for 12 volts and carrying load. Then get a volt/meter or 12 volt test light and start at battery and work back to fuse box and check for lose of power. MT

I don't know where to begin! I follow the wires as far as I can see them, but then what? Do you know of any specific places I should be looking?

It sounds like a dirty battery cable or bad battery post or battery to me. Check all battery cables first. Clean battery post and cables And ground on engine. Start at battery and go as far as you can see or you may find it right at battery. Some of them get there power from starter post. And some have a fuse link there. If all else fails get a good factory manual or a All data sub and trace the power feeds from the wiring diagram. http://www.alldata.com/products/diy/index.html

Re: 2000 dead jimmy! never had a problem, now it's dead!
Here is an update. I wanted to disconnect the starter to see if that would change anything as far as getting power to the rest of the vehicle. SO, I touch the first bolt, crank it a little.....and snap!....SO, I buy a new starter and install it. There as no room for error because the starter has specific size posts for specific size cables. Install goes well....As soon as go to reconnect the battery, the engine starts turning over, all by itself. No power to anything still, but the engine turns over all by itself. So, I undo the two mounting screws on the starter, let it hang out of the bottom of the truck, reconnect the battery---and nothin. nothing at all happens. Maybe the starter connected creates some type of ground?
