changing door hinges..

anyone ever changed the hinges on the doors.. i need to do both bottom ones... how do i proceed..?? I got the hinges i just need to primer them and, then paint them the color of my car ( silver )...

Open your doors, you may need to remove your fenders I can't remember, find the nuts for the hinges, remove the nuts while supporting the door (use a jack with a pad or something so you dont scuff up yuor door), remove the hinges from the frame, replace, follow through in reverse. by the way, why do you need to replace the hinges?

hey.. well from what i see i dont need to remove the fenders... I can see the nuts pretty well.. Maybe i might need a special key tho.. Well the reason i wanna change them is because they have a litlle play(up & down).. both bottom ones... so before it gets any worse, ill need to change them.. dont you think.. I bought them..

Judging by how my hinges were on my 96, they seem like pretty solid and sturdy hinges, i think on your 02 they're just loose or something, I can't think of any other way they'd give you play. And the only thing I used to get mine off was a ratchet and socket. Metric of course.

If i were you i would take the fender off just so u have better access to the door, and i would leave the door locked and on the car so when you put the new hinges on it doesnt mess up the placement of the door when u close it...

i dont understand when you say the my bolts are loose.. How can that be ?? also my doors are 56"long.. so the hinges take some good stress there..

Loose, like maybe you just have to tighten them again, I can't imagine how a solid steel hinge can wear out to give your door play, like I said I have a 1996 cavalier that I put lambos on and those stock hinges are SOLID, hell they're more sturdy then my lambos were. Actually, now that I think about it...the way the hinges are made I don't think it's possible to give your door play.

im telling ya my doors have play and, they both have the same play..unless its normall for 2002 to have a little play... mind you the hinges were never greased.. and, well iv reached about 49000kms... can it be that its normall they have a small play like that.. of about an 8th of an inch..

Just try to tighten the bolts and go from there.

1. If equipped with power door components, disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Make sure the window is raised up to its fully closed position.
3. Remove the door trim panel, as outlined later in this section.
4. If equipped with power door components, move the water deflector enough to access the door wiring harness, then detach the electrical connectors and remove the harness.
5. Remove the rubber conduit from the door.
6. Unfasten the door hold-open bolt.
7. Have an assistant support the door.
8. Matchmark the position of the door hinge to the hinge pillar. Unfasten the lower and upper hinge bolts from the pillar.
9. With an assistant's help, detach the door from the body.
10. Matchmark the position of the door hinge to the door, then unfasten the upper and lower hinge retaining bolts. Carefully remove the door from the vehicle.

To install:

1. Snug the upper and lower hinge-to-door bolts so the door can be moved.
2. With the aid of an assistant, position the door to the body.
3. Snug the upper and lower hinge-to-pillar bolts and nuts so that the door can be moved.
4. Carefully close the door. Adjust the door for proper alignment.
5. Slowly open the door.
6. Tighten the upper and lower hinge-to-pillar bolts and nuts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
7. Tighten the upper and lower hinge-to-door bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
8. Check the door for proper alignment. If the door does not align properly, readjust.
9. Install the door detent-to-hinge pillar bolt, then tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
10. If so equipped, install the electrical harness through the conduit access hole and connect the electrical connectors to the power door components.
11. Fasten the rubber conduit to the door.
12. Reposition and secure the door water deflector.
13. Install the inner door trim panel, as outlined later in this section.
14. Connect the negative battery cable.

1. Open the door and carefully loosen the hinge bolts.
2. Carefully slide the door up or down accordingly until the height is correct.
3. Tighten the hinge bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

it's really NOT that hard, it took 2 people to remove my stock doors and put LAMBO hinges on them and then put the doors back on.
