Rear view mirror with temp and compass question..

Hello, have a 1996 gmc z71 4x4. I want to install this mirror from a 1996 tahoe. What will I need to take out of the tahoe to transfer into the truck ? Anyone ever do this ? Is it easy ? Thanks for any help.

Re: Rear view mirror with temp and compass question..

I didn't think the 96 tahoe had temperature, just the compass. I could be wrong, my wife says I usually am.

I took a mirror out of a 99 suburban and put in my 96 k1500. The 96 had a mirror with compass but no temperature. The plug is the same, just has fewer terminals. You will need the sensor from in front of the radiator. It is mounted to the center post that supports the hood latch. It will have a green wire and a brown wire connected. You will need the connector also. I can take a picture of mine if you have trouble finding it.

Does your 96 have the mirror with compass and three wires going to a 7 prong connector, or just a plain mirror with no wiring harness?

Thanks for the reply James. My mirror is just the plain old mirror. So I would need everything. Just wondering if its worth it or not to do the swap.

Re: Rear view mirror with temp and compass question..

You will need the plug also. It is a 7 pin plug but probably only has 5 wires connected. The two wires closest to the driver side go to the sensor in front of the radiator. The three wires closest to the passenger side are for 12v power, compass and monochromatic mirror. The two wires in the middle control the outside monochromatic mirrors and you won't need them.

You should check under the headliner, there may be a plug already there. My truck had the compass and 3 wires so all I had to do was use an icepick to push the silver tab on the side and remove the two additional wires from the donor truck and insert them into my connector.

I was worth the time for me. The hard part may be finding out where to connect the other three wires if you truck doesn't have a plug under the liner.
