coil, distributer, cps???

My dad is trying to figure out his jeep comanchee. he says there is fire going to the bottom of the distributer from the wiring harness and that there is fire going to the coil. there however is not any fire from the coil to the distributer. is the cps the problem, can I test it? also the alternator isnt installed yet, would that cause anything like this???

Let me see if I have this straight....so when he cranks it over, there is no spark from the coil wire? What year and engine do you have?

Re: coil, distributer, cps???

Are you getting spark to spark plugs? Have you checked condition of disrtibutor cap, rotor, also check the carbon button in center of cap, inside the cap. year and engine size. When you say fire do you mean actual spark or do you mean electrical voltage at distributor. Check for actual spark at coil and distributor, plugs [email protected] Dale

Cool Re: coil, distributer, cps???

88 model Commanche...MJ model

I don't know what the smog laws are like where U are at...butta...
look into a distibutor and coil without the computer stuff...like MSD..or Accel..

Just looked at manual for 88 XJ...looks like GM HEI with coil in cap...is that correct?
So it does not use the CPS.

There is another one on the 88 XJ that has a crank sensor, but don't know if your model is prone to a defective cps like the later ones.

First/ I would use an OHM meter to check the coil and the CPS. If those check out good then I would suspect the Cam position sensor (pickup/stator) that is in the distributor. If it is the Cam sensor you will have to remove the distributor to change it.

Good luck
Mike
