1998 Windstar ABS Light stays on

Some time ago, my ABS Light stopped going off. I've checked my brake fluid level & it's OK. Brakes work fine, in fact I've just had new brakes put on.

Any ideas?

Re: 1998 Windstar ABS Light stays on

Did the light stay on before or after the breaks were done.? I would almost guess it involves a ABS wheel sensor. When you had the breaks done if the light was on a good mechanic should have advised you as to the problem by reading the code. They should have cleaned the sensors when the rotors were removed. Mettalic shavings get entraped in the gear that the sensor reads and can cause the ABS light to go on. I had a problem that the half shaft on the driverside was replaced and the tolerances were to close and the sensor actually rubbed on the gear causing a whole in the sensor thus the light went on. That was a coule of months after the shaft was replaced. Pull the wheels check each sensor carefully and use Break Clean to clean. There are many discussions on this subject Do a search on ABS wheel speed sensor or post back.

The light was actually on before I had the brakes done. Thanks for the info Mike, I'm going to take the van back to the brake shop.
