ABS/Trac Off

Hope all is well out there in GP land.
I have a question about ABS.
My ASB & Trac Off lights have been coming on simultaneously however when I turn the car off and start up again there OFF and don't come on again till I've been driving for a while.
Now I've noticed before the lights come on I can feel the ASB kicking on prematurely it will do this a couple of times and then ASB/Trac Off lights come on.
I've checked to see if there are any codes but get none.

99 GT 220km.

Re: ABS/Trac Off

Whats up Wylie? Was an ABS capable scanner used to check for DTCs?

Sounds like you may have one or more flaky wheel sensors (hub bearing).

Re: ABS/Trac Off

Hi B: this is the one I used http://www.auteltech.com/code1.htm
it looks like it does support DTC but still no codes.
I wondering if its a lose sensor wire or something.
Where do the sensor wires connect to the hub?

Re: ABS/Trac Off

Yeah, that scanner cannot read GM ABS codes. There has to be a code to trigger the ABS light and only ABS capable scanners can read them. Like Snap On MT2500 and the GM Tech II.

Without jacking the car up, turn the wheels to the far right to check driver's side for example. If you look carefully you will see the electrical connector on the backside of the hub. The wiring harness snakes along the lower control arm. You can remove the connector and see if there is moisture.

Re: ABS/Trac Off

Hey wylie, my 99 did the same thing, and it was corrosion on the wires at the connector on the hub.. The wires finally broke, and the abs light was on constantly. Since my hub wasn't noisy or bad, I repaired the wires by soldering them back together, and using liquid electrical tape to reinsulate them. All is still good now 6 months and 8k miles later. I figured it was worth a shot, instead of spending $150 and a few hours changing a hub.

Re: ABS/Trac Off

Also, be careful removing the electrical connector. It is a typical GM weird connector which is two piece. Don't undo the top half where the wires go in or you will damage or break a wire. The one to grab hold of is the bottom most latch/retainer and then pull off whole electrical plug. There is a rubber accordian seal so check to make sure it is there and in good condition. You can use electrical contact cleaner and let dry to help remove moisture which is a possibility due to the storm. Spray both hub side and electrical plug side connectors.

Re: ABS/Trac Off

I am having the same problem with my '98. The wires have broken at the connector on the harness that runs down the control arm. There is no wire to work with for repair. Any idea if this harness is a dealer item? I have had no luck at the local parts stores. Thank you.
