69 Nova Oil Pan Replacement

Well - what I thought looked like a fairly easy job isn't.

I suppose I'll have to loosen the tranny mount bolts and raise the motor to replace a cracked oil pan. I don't think removing the center link will clear the crank in the front.

Would someone please confirm this before I go off on another tangent!

I read the recent post for the 63 Nova - mine's a rear sump.

Thanks - Bert

Re: 69 Nova Oil Pan Replacement

You will have to lift the engine about 3", in order that the oil pan will clear both the crossmember and the crank throws. Depending upon clearance issues, you may or may not have to loosen the trans mount bolts. You will have to remove the through bolts on the engine mounts.

You can carefully lift the engine using a floor jack (as long as you have a block of wood between the pan and the jack), then put a couple of pieces of 4x4 between the lower and upper engine mounts to suspend the engine 3" off the crossmember. Watch for any distortion of the oil pan while doing this - if you see any, STOP! You can easily break the oil pump pickup screen loose, so excersize care.
