Planning some Z Mods

Bear with me im trying to learn as quickly as possible....

I am a little confused when it comes to running higher levels of boost. I know that a JWT ECU will come with boost jets, but if I got a controller like the Apexi AVC-R do I still need the boost jets? Further, do I really need a re-programmed ECU If I plan on keeping the boost under 1 bar using an EBC?

To my understanding, the new ECU will assume the boost levels are changed by the boost jets and NOT the controller. With the AVC-R I could change the boost as a function of RPM, for example. Would a re-mapped ECU really be beneficial? Or would i need some kind of piggy back system.

I just want to be able to increase and decrease my boost level safely and whenever I wish.

Re: Planning some Z Mods

i wouldnt raise the boost until you have upgraded the exhaust, intake and ecu.the remaped JWT or Ashspec ecu will be very beneficial as it allows the car to run properly at higher boost and it gives a significant power gain.

also if you have a boost controller the boost jets are not needed. the boost jets will only increase your boost to about 12psi.

No.

Very much yes.

The ECU has no knowledge of anything other than the amount of boost that is being made. How it is being made and with what is totally irrelevant.

To my knowledge: As boost levels increase the fuel/air ratio and perhaps more importantly the timing advance changes with it. The stock ECU is programed with a table set that does not go beyond the stock boost limit. The ECU program can make an educated guess as to the timing and fuel requirements but it's still based off of the stock mapping. An aftermarket ECU has extended and altered fuel and timing maps to ensure the engine is getting what it needs. This upgrade is for safety.

The AVC-R has the ablity to remember multiple boost levels you can pre-set and scroll through with the touch of a button. I have a Profec with only a two position low and high setting and it's enough for me.

Re: Planning some Z Mods

the AVC-R is a very nice boost controller but for the money you are spendingi may consider the Blitz SBC series. they seem to be the favorite among Z owners/tuners.

do you have the profec B spec II? or do you have the older one?

i have heard a few complaints about the spec II alot because the solenoid tends to fail after short periods of time. but then again, other people swear by it. :shrugs:

i have it but have not gotten a chance to use it yet.

Re: Planning some Z Mods

I don't think anyone on this forum has a SAFC but I've seen the results on a lot of other cars. If you have a decent amount of upgrades and access to a dyno then its most likely going to be worth your money. It's not going to pull a lot of power out of a mostly stock car but as you get more and more customized the more it can do for you. This is provided you know how to tune it, which really isn't too hard.

K3: I have a Spec II. I like it. It's extremely easy to use, it literally took me five minutes to get it setup, both high and low. It did take me a few minutes to figure out what they meant by some of the settings but once it clicked the dialing in was easy. As for the solenoids, I've seen two types. One is a larger box and the other is like mine, the little black box with pink and grey wires coming out it. I don't know if the failures were due to anything in particular but I seem to recall the larger box style (it has two seperate solenoids running parallel to each other inside it) coming up in the "my profec took a shit" posts I've seen.

i also have the little black box with the pink and grey wires coming out of it. i went through the manual and things and as you said, some of there wording was weird and i was trying to figure out what it was talking about. ahh well....ill figure it out when it matters.
