Just thinking.....Any safe oil additives??

I have been looking around at the for sale adds, in the hope to update my 98 Olds Eighty-Eight. I keep on seeing that many times, the best priced used car is the Intrepid. So, I read through this forum and other sites as well and found out about the blown engines caused by sludge problems with the 2.7 liter engine.

However, getting a 2002 with 60,000 miles for only $4,000 is still pretty appealing.

I was thinking of going out to see this car. I know about the lift the oil filler cap (to look for sludge) trick. Also, I have heard that owners should look for blue smoke coming out the exhaust. But I'm not sure if that's true or not. Is there anything else to check?

As a question, are there any 'safe' oil additives that can be added to the engine to remove the sludge? If there was, I could clean the engine and then switch to Mobil 1. Also, does it help any to drop the oil pan and clean out the gunk on the bottom?

Thanks,
Stan

There's a reason why it's so appealing...the 2.7L with 60,000 miles has a good chance of already having sludge, or will be experiencing it soon. However, i've heard that using synthetic oil from the beginning (zero miles) virturally eliminates the problem. If anything looks fishy with it (like blue smoke & sludge in the oil cap) DON'T BUY IT.

Thanks,

Your best safest additive is no additive.
Good clean oil and good oil filter at good regular change intervials.

If using regular oil go for 2-3K changes instead of 5-6K

Do not add any oil additives and switch to Mobil 1 synthetic oil.One more thing, change the oil every 3,000 miles and not before or after 3,000 miles.I have heard of of one Dodge dealership in the Grand Rapids,Mi area recomending putting in synthetic oil the 2.7 from a Jasper rep.
